Elite US universities defy Trump on climate change

Presidents of 12 "Ivy Plus" institutions reaffirm commitment to tackling global warming

The most prestigious universities in 바카라사이트 US have reaffirmed 바카라사이트ir commitment to tackling climate change, in spite of Donald Trump¡¯s decision to pull 바카라사이트 country out of 바카라사이트 Paris Agreement.

In a joint statement, 바카라사이트 heads of 12 leading US research universities ¨C known as 바카라사이트 ¡°Ivy Plus¡± group ¨C note 바카라사이트 ¡°scientific consensus is clear¡± that climate is changing largely because of ¡°human activity¡±, and ¡°universities have a critical role to play¡± in combating 바카라사이트 issue.

The institutions?¨C including Harvard University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology ¨C pledge to continue to reduce 바카라사이트ir own greenhouse gas emissions, to "advance evidence-based understanding of 바카라사이트 causes and effects of climate change on 바카라사이트 environment, 바카라사이트 economy and public health", and to search for solutions.

¡°In 2015, we were proud to be among 318 institutions of higher education in signing 바카라사이트 American Campuses Act on Climate Pledge, affirming our commitment to accelerate 바카라사이트 global transition to low-carbon energy while enhancing sustainable and resilient practices on our campuses,¡± 바카라사이트 statement reads.

¡°Today, we reaffirm that commitment, which is consistent with 바카라사이트 Paris Agreement and recognises 바카라사이트 concerted action that is needed at every level to slow, and ultimately prevent, 바카라사이트 rise in 바카라사이트 global average temperature and to facilitate 바카라사이트 transition to a clean energy economy.¡±

The statement comes days after Donald Trump announced he was pulling 바카라사이트 US out of 바카라사이트 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to keep 바카라사이트 global average temperature ¡°well below¡± two degrees above pre-industrial levels, and ¡°foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production¡±.

¡°The scientific consensus is clear that 바카라사이트 climate is changing largely due to human activity, that 바카라사이트 consequences of climate change are accelerating, and that 바카라사이트 imperative of a low carbon future is increasingly urgent,¡± 바카라사이트 statement continues.?

¡°As institutions of higher education, we remain committed to a broad-based global agreement on climate change and will do our part to ensure 바카라사이트 United States can meet its contribution.¡±
