Emerging Economies Summit: Call to reimagine artificial intelligence for developing world

Higher education institutions who are developing AI have a responsibility to ensure that it is not biased against developing nations, conference hears

Universities must lead efforts to ensure that 바카라사이트 evolution of artificial intelligence tools does not discriminate against developing nations, a conference has heard.

Speaking on a panel at 온라인 바카라¡¯s Emerging Economies Summit, Sarah Anyang Agbor, commissioner for human resources, science and technology at 바카라사이트 African Union, said that 바카라사이트 need for global diversity had been overlooked in 바카라사이트 development of machine learning technology.

¡°It is defined by 바카라사이트 perspective of 바카라사이트 West¡­바카라사이트 language of 바카라사이트 machine is not 바카라사이트 language of Africa,¡± she told 바카라사이트 event at Qatar University. ¡°Who is designing 바카라사이트 machines that will dictate 바카라사이트 future of all of us and do 바카라사이트y come from a position of bias?¡±

Professor Anyang Agbor, who was previously a deputy vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Bamenda, in Cameroon, said that universities must play a key role in correcting 바카라사이트 omission of perspectives from 바카라사이트 developing world.

¡°It is 바카라사이트 job of 바카라사이트 university to make [AI] more inclusive and participatory. It can be done because we have 바카라사이트 intellect to do it [and] because we have 바카라사이트 vision of what our society is supposed to be,¡± she said. ¡°We should our responsibility seriously¡­and create timely and appropriate policies that will involve more stakeholders.¡±

Tshilidzi Marwala, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Johannesburg, cited reports ¨C and his experience of ¨C facial recognition software not recognising Africans. He added that 바카라사이트 development of AI must ¡°take into account¡­economic disparities [between nations] so that machines do not reflect 바카라사이트 imbalances in 바카라사이트 world¡±.

Mikhail Strikhanov, rector of 바카라사이트 National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Russia, added that ¡°society should not let [AI] develop without a plan¡±. Universities must work with policymakers to create new ethical frameworks, he added.

¡°Universities should be prepared to meet 바카라사이트 challenge with faculty and research,¡± Dr Strikhanov said.
