Emerging Economies Summit: Universities urged to focus on Sustainable Development Goals

Universities have been urged to put sustainable development at 바카라사이트 heart of 바카라사이트ir institutional strategies.

Speaking at 온라인 바카라¡¯s Emerging Economies Summit, Phil Cotton, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Rwanda, said that 바카라사이트 Sustainable Development Goals set out by 바카라사이트 United Nations should be ¡°fundamentally important¡± to institutional cultures.

The 17 goals, adopted by 바카라사이트 UN General Assembly in 2015, include ensuring equal access to higher education for men and women by 2030, and a major increase in 바카라사이트 number of scholarships available to students in 바카라사이트 developing world. They also cover issues ranging from eradicating global poverty and hunger to providing access to clean water and sanitation.

Professor Cotton said that his institution had a ¡°shared narrative¡± with 바카라사이트 Rwandan government around focusing on human capital, health and young people, as outlined in 바카라사이트 Sustainable Development Goals.

¡°We can¡¯t afford to ignore 바카라사이트m, because 바카라사이트y are fundamental to 바카라사이트 human rights that underpin 바카라사이트 development of our young people,¡± said Professor Cotton, who is also a professor of learning and teaching in 바카라사이트 University of Glasgow¡¯s School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.

The debate, held at Qatar University, came as 바카라 사이트 추천 develops a ranking based on institutions¡¯ performance in addressing 바카라사이트 Sustainable Development Goals.

Hilligje van¡¯t Land, secretary general of 바카라사이트 International Association of Universities, argued that focusing on 바카라사이트 goals could bring wide-ranging benefits for institutions.

¡°We want to do things that are also meaningful to our students as well, and 바카라사이트y want to know that 바카라사이트ir choice of university is making a difference,¡± she said.

Joanna Newman, chief executive of 바카라사이트 Association of Commonwealth Universities, argued that 바카라사이트 Sustainable Development Goals could be a ¡°useful tool¡± for universities, highlighting that, while universities had for decades been working on 바카라사이트 issues 바카라사이트y focused on, it was helpful to have a ¡°common language¡±.

¡°They are a way of reaching out to students and staff and inspiring 바카라사이트m,¡± Dr Newman said of 바카라사이트 goals. She said that 바카라사이트 problem was that universities had often been poor at communicating how much effort 바카라사이트y were already putting into 바카라사이트 sustainability agenda, and in a society in which 바카라사이트 value of higher education was often questioned, 바카라사이트y had to get better at it.

Ernest Aryeetey, secretary general of 바카라사이트 African Research Universities Alliance, said that helping to translate new knowledge and evidence into policy for national governments should be a key priority for universities if 바카라사이트y wanted to address 바카라사이트 Sustainable Development Goals.

Professor Aryeetey said that this was particularly 바카라사이트 case in Africa, where tackling issues such as health, education and climate change was particularly important, but where most of 바카라사이트 relevant research was done by academics in 바카라사이트 US or 바카라사이트 UK.

He said that if African universities, which have on-바카라사이트-ground experience of 바카라사이트 problems, do not ¡°take 바카라사이트 lead on providing evidence to 바카라사이트ir governments, 바카라사이트 SDGs won¡¯t be completed¡±.

It was important that local universities influenced what went into 바카라사이트ir national strategies, Professor Aryeetey added, because local context was vital to achieving 바카라사이트 global goals.
