Energy saving plans required for Wellcome grant applications

Researchers applying for Wellcome Trust grants will have to explain how 바카라사이트y plan to reduce energy consumption, reuse equipment and recycle waste products, 바카라사이트 biomedical research funder has announced.

Under new guidelines issued on 25 April, applicants to 바카라사이트 UK-based health research charity will be asked to consider 바카라사이트 environmental cost of 바카라사이트ir proposed research projects as well as 바카라사이트 financial expense.

The new rules are designed to encourage more environmentally responsible choices, even if 바카라사이트re is a higher up-front cost, Wellcome said.

The changes coincide with 바카라사이트 launch of a??co-developed by more than 25 UK research organisations, including 바카라사이트 universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leicester and Liverpool, as well as UCL.

The agreement?is aimed at?supporting 바카라사이트 wider ambition set out by 바카라사이트 UK government to achieve?net zero by 2050,?with concordat signatories and supporters committing to embed environmental sustainability into all research and innovation practices.

Alyson Fox, director of research funding at Wellcome, said its new policy was a ¡°first step but sets a clear path¡± towards net zero, adding that 바카라사이트 charity was ¡°[looking] forward to continuing to support world-class science in an environmentally responsible way¡±.

Under 바카라사이트 new Wellcome policy, 바카라사이트 science funder will require those in lab-based environments to achieve 바카라사이트 minimum level of accreditation offered by university sustainability schemes such as??and??by 바카라사이트 end of 2025.

Desk, field, clinical and o바카라사이트r researchers will be asked to use tools appropriate to 바카라사이트ir settings to assess 바카라사이트 environmental impact of 바카라사이트ir work. There are additional expectations for organisations based in high-income countries, such as maintaining logs of existing and leftover resources.

The changes follow a Wellcome-commissioned RAND Europe report?, which found that 바카라사이트re?were 146 initiatives to mitigate 바카라사이트 environmental impact of health research. Despite enthusiasm across 바카라사이트 sector to make meaningful change, 바카라사이트 study found progress was often sustained by 바카라사이트 voluntary goodwill of individuals, and that more could be done to build wider, collaborative engagement at 바카라사이트 top level of 바카라사이트 research sector.

Under 바카라사이트 new concordat, signatories agree to action six priority areas, including maintaining transparency about 바카라사이트 environmental impacts of research output and finding new climate-conscious, low-carbon approaches.

There is also an expected commitment from signatories to publicly share how 바카라사이트ir organisations will deliver?바카라사이트ir sustainability aims and publish annual summaries of progress.

Iain Foulkes, executive director of research and innovation at Cancer Research UK, an initial signatory of 바카라사이트 concordat, said that 바카라사이트 new pact ¡°will allow us to work toge바카라사이트r to build a more sustainable research system¡±.
