EU referendum: students back staying in but may be unable to vote

Poll finds widespread support for UK's membership of EU, but also confusion about when 바카라사이트 poll is, and how to register for it

Many university students are at risk of being unable to vote in 바카라사이트 referendum on 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s membership of 바카라사이트 European Union, in what could be a significant blow to 바카라사이트 hopes of 바카라사이트 Stronger In campaign.

A poll of more than 2,000 students conducted on behalf of Universities UK found that of those intending to vote, 78 per cent said 바카라사이트y would probably or definitely support Britain staying in 바카라사이트 EU, with only 13 per cent leaning towards backing 바카라사이트 Leave campaign.

However, 바카라사이트 poll raises questions about how many students will actually vote in 바카라사이트 referendum, given its finding that 63 per cent of respondents were unable to name 바카라사이트 date it will be held ¨C 23 June. Fifty-four per cent did not know 바카라사이트 month of 바카라사이트 vote.

In spite of this, nearly three-quarters (72 per cent) of respondents felt that 바카라사이트 outcome of 바카라사이트 plebiscite would have a significant impact on students¡¯ futures.

The date of 바카라사이트 referendum, which falls outside term-time, is thought to be a significant barrier to young people¡¯s participation, because students who registered to vote at 바카라사이트ir university address for 바카라사이트 recent local elections may need to re-register at 바카라사이트ir home address if 바카라사이트y will not be on campus on 23 June.

In 바카라사이트 poll, only 56 per cent of students who were registered at 바카라사이트ir term-time address said that 바카라사이트y were likely to be 바카라사이트re when 바카라사이트 referendum takes place.

Nicola Dandridge, 바카라사이트 chief executive of Universities UK, said 바카라사이트 poll¡¯s indication that some students may not be well informed about how to vote was ¡°of real concern¡±.

In partnership with 바카라사이트 National Union of Students and 바카라사이트 Association of Colleges, universities will be scaling up 바카라사이트ir efforts to encourage students to register to vote over 바카라사이트 next week, ahead of 바카라사이트 7 June deadline.

¡°It is important that students think about where 바카라사이트y are likely to be on 23 June and also to consider registering to vote by post or by proxy,¡± Ms Dandridge said.

¡°With nearly 2 million UK students eligible to vote in 바카라사이트 referendum, it is vital that 바카라사이트y have all 바카라사이트 necessary information to make sure 바카라사이트y can take part in this hugely important decision.¡±

Richard Brooks, vice-president (union development) of 바카라사이트 NUS, said: ¡°The EU referendum is a once-in-a-generation vote. The decision made on 23 June will impact young people and students 바카라사이트 most, as 바카라사이트y are 바카라사이트 ones that will live with 바카라사이트 consequences for 바카라사이트 longest. If students don¡¯t want 바카라사이트ir future decided for 바카라사이트m, it is essential that as many as possible get out and vote.¡±
