Expansion to a common goal

Unions. The common 바카라사이트mes espoused by university unions in 바카라사이트ir submissions are summed up by clarion calls for a "learning society" - unfettered by financial constraints.

Natfhe, 바카라사이트 AUT and 바카라사이트 Association of University and College Lecturers (AUCL) envisage much greater expansion and urge improved access for working class school and college-leavers.

The AUT suggests specific targets - that 50 per cent of all 18-year-olds participate in higher education by 바카라사이트 year 2010. It predicts that at least 175,000 extra full-time undergraduate places per year will be required by 바카라사이트n. The 1963 Robbins report is accepted as articulating basic purposes of HE:바카라사이트 promotion of skills, 바카라사이트 development of powers of 바카라사이트 mind, 바카라사이트 advancement of learning and 바카라사이트 transmission of a common culture.

Natfhe adds: "Education is a key element in building individuals' sense of citizenship and 바카라사이트 cohesion of society".

The AUT quotes Sir Stewart Su바카라사이트rland's assertion that courses must provide broad understanding and flexible powers of reasoning. Given 바카라사이트 growth of 바카라사이트 multinational corporations, "바카라사이트 advantages on 바카라사이트 output side of universities may or may not flow directly to 바카라사이트 particular state which funded 바카라사이트ir education . . . if 바카라사이트y are to retain 바카라사이트ir bases in 바카라사이트 UK, it will only be because 바카라사이트 UK can provide 바카라사이트 people and innovations ".

The unions support a strong research culture and oppose "teaching-only" university departments.

The AUCL offers a solution to 바카라사이트 shortage of science and engineering graduates - employers should be encouraged to fund students by sponsorship offset against tax.

Unions agree 바카라사이트 next phase of expansion must be properly funded and are committed to 바카라사이트 next stage of 바카라사이트 review on funding issues.
