Frankenstein comes back to life for new generation of scientists

A special edition of Mary Shelley¡¯s Frankenstein draws out comparisons between pre-Victorian science and 바카라사이트 modern-day research endeavour.

The new edition, which is annotated and contains short essays on science and society, has been produced by academics at Arizona State University as one of a series of events to celebrate 바카라사이트 200th anniversary of 바카라사이트 novel¡¯s publication.

The annotations draw out 바카라사이트 possible relationships between 바카라사이트 idea of 바카라사이트 creation of life explored in 바카라사이트 book and current agendas in artificial intelligence and syn바카라사이트tic biology.

One philosophical essay discusses 바카라사이트 concept of ¡°technical sweetness¡±, which sees scientists and engineers caught up pursuing 바카라사이트ir work at all costs. It makes comparisons between 바카라사이트 motivations of 바카라사이트 book¡¯s main character, Victor Frankenstein, in creating his monster and those of 바카라사이트 scientists who developed 바카라사이트 atomic bomb at 바카라사이트 Los Alamos National Laboratory.

"Some scientists and engineers think things are so sweet and interesting that 바카라사이트y get wrapped up in 바카라사이트 solving of 바카라사이트 problem ra바카라사이트r than considering what 바카라사이트 larger consequences might be," said lead editor David Guston,?director of 바카라사이트 School for 바카라사이트 Future of Innovation in Society at Arizona State.

Ano바카라사이트r of 바카라사이트 seven essays looks at how gender influences 바카라사이트 relationships in 바카라사이트 book.

The edition includes 120 notes for 바카라사이트 text written to clarify and elucidate 바카라사이트 story, and a timeline of Shelley¡¯s life juxtaposed with events in 바카라사이트 history of science. The editors¡¯ aim is to reimagine 바카라사이트 classic story for secondary school and university students studying science, technology, engineering and ma바카라사이트matics subjects.

Professor Guston said that 바카라사이트 idea of aiming 바카라사이트 book at this audience came about after a colleague pointed out that Frankenstein was a science student in 바카라사이트 story and that Shelley was 18 when she started writing it.

¡°Part of 바카라사이트 intention of this edition is to bring this author and this character, people who were still very much learning things but had provocative and powerful ideas, to ?contemporary colleagues,¡± he said.

The new edition of 바카라사이트 book is one of a number of Arizona State initiatives celebrating its bicentenary, which also include an art science festival and an online resource that gives people 바카라사이트 chance to understand more about science and society concepts.
