Georgetown University will favour student applications from descendants of slaves, as part of a series of measures designed to atone for its historical ties to slavery.
John DeGioia, 바카라사이트 university¡¯s president, said that in 바카라사이트 admissions process descendants of slaves will be given 바카라사이트 ¡°same consideration¡± as members of 바카라사이트 Georgetown community and an Institute for 바카라사이트 Study of Slavery and Its Legacies will be established to ¡°support 바카라사이트 continued, active engagement with descendants¡± and ¡°sustained research¡±.
The moves follow 바카라사이트 publication of a by 바카라사이트 Working Group on Slavery, Memory and Reconciliation, which was launched by 바카라사이트 president in September 2015 to make recommendations on how best to acknowledge 바카라사이트 university¡¯s history in relation to slavery. In 1838, 바카라사이트 university profited from 바카라사이트 sale of 272 slaves.
The university will also rename several of its buildings to honour slaves and remove 바카라사이트 mention of previous presidents that administered 바카라사이트 1838 sale. It will also create a ¡°living and evolving¡± memorial to 바카라사이트 slaves from whom Georgetown benefited, which will be designed with input from 바카라사이트 descendants of those slaves, said 바카라사이트 president.
Marcia Chatelain, associate professor of history and African American studies at Georgetown and a member of 바카라사이트 working group, said that she hopes 바카라사이트 university¡¯s approach ¡°teaches people that nothing bad happens when we¡¯re honest about 바카라사이트 past¡±.
¡°I think we¡¯re in a critical moment in our country about race relations and about navigating 바카라사이트 long-term consequences of inequality,¡± she said.
