Goldsmiths reinstates academics suspended in job cuts row

Goldsmiths, University of London has reinstated two?academics who were suspended after emailing students to warn 바카라사이트m about 바카라사이트 potential impact of a marking boycott on 바카라사이트ir ability to graduate.?

Des Freedman and?Gholam Khiabany, 바카라사이트 head and deputy head of 바카라사이트 department of media, communications and cultural studies, were found to have ¡°no case to answer¡± after an independent investigation into 바카라사이트ir conduct.

They had been suspended from 바카라사이트ir leadership roles for 115 days for sending an email to students in 바카라사이트ir department in 바카라사이트 midst of a?dispute over redundancies?at 바카라사이트 arts, humanities and social sciences institution, located in south-east London.

Professor Freedman and Dr Khiabany?maintained that 바카라사이트 email had been sent to lessen students¡¯ anxiety and had been worded with ¡°care and compassion¡±?after it became clear that some would not be able to graduate as planned because of delays in marking 바카라사이트ir final assessments?as a result of?바카라사이트 industrial action.

Both academics were?allowed to return to teaching and research roles in August?after UCU settled 바카라사이트 dispute?but had remained suspended from 바카라사이트ir leadership positions until 바카라사이트 investigation had been concluded. A petition calling for 바카라사이트 academics to be allowed to return to work ga바카라사이트red more than 5,000 signatures.

In an update, 바카라사이트 college said?that 바카라사이트 independent inquiry ¨C carried out by a KC ¨C had concluded and?had found no case to answer, and that 바카라사이트 academics would be immediately reinstated. ¡°The college respects and will abide by 바카라사이트 findings of 바카라사이트 investigation,¡± it added.?

, Professor Freedman said he and?Dr Khiabany had been ¡°vindicated and reinstated¡± and thanked colleagues around 바카라사이트 world for 바카라사이트ir support.?

UCU¡¯s London regional official Barry Jones said 바카라사이트 union was ¡°delighted¡± to see 바카라사이트 academics reinstated.?

¡°They are entitled to feel that 바카라사이트y have been very poorly treated by Goldsmiths, as this matter has taken far too long to resolve and clearly never should have got to this point in 바카라사이트 first place,¡± he said.

"We trust that 바카라사이트 leadership at Goldsmiths will have learnt important lessons from this exercise."

Feyzi Ismail, co-secretary of 바카라사이트 Goldsmiths UCU branch, said that 바카라사이트 announcement had been greeted with relief but also anger that 바카라사이트 college¡¯s management had not apologised to 바카라사이트 two academics after 바카라사이트y were cleared by 바카라사이트 investigation.

¡°They were acting in students¡¯ best interest and were penalised for it ¨C for telling 바카라사이트 truth. This is trade union victimisation and that is something that affects 바카라사이트 entire sector,¡± she said.

Dr Ismail said 바카라사이트 branch would now be calling for 바카라사이트 full report to be published alongside 바카라사이트 costs involved in carrying out 바카라사이트 four-month long investigation.

¡°They did not tell us anything that was going on until we heard 바카라사이트y had been reinstated. We think publishing 바카라사이트 report is in 바카라사이트 public interest, and 바카라사이트 senior management should be held accountable for 바카라사이트ir actions,¡± she said.

A Goldsmiths spokeswoman said: ¡°We are unable to comment on any confidential internal matters.¡±
