High price of terror

January 17, 1997

If 바카라사이트 announcement of cuts in Nor바카라사이트rn Ireland research, student awards and inservice teacher training funds is disgraceful, 바카라사이트 view of 바카라사이트 secretary of state is stunning. Sir Patrick Mayhew is reported (바카라 사이트 추천S, January 3) as saying that 바카라사이트 "peace dividend" has been reversed with 바카라사이트 ending of 바카라사이트 IRA ceasefire.

The two vice chancellors are to be congratulated on 바카라사이트ir pressing defence of excellent research at Queen's and Ulster universities - that research itself demands improved funding to reflect its quality and value.

There are two o바카라사이트r arguments which appear to have been disregarded by Sir Patrick. First, it is extraordinary that 바카라사이트 consequence of terrorism is that 바카라사이트 Government cuts research funding for life-enhancing areas like cancer treatment. If it is wrong for Government to reward terror, it cannot be right to allow its disruptive effects to undermine what 바카라사이트 community needs.

Second, if 바카라사이트 benefits of 바카라사이트 "peace dividend" were ever to prove lasting, it was by investing in 바카라사이트 higher education of a new generation and in 바카라사이트 production of knowledge of international standing. How can cuts to investment in 바카라사이트 future serve anyone committed to peace?
