Historian snubs $1 million Israeli academic prize

A UK historian has turned down a lucrative Israeli academic award, citing 바카라사이트 ¡°politics of Israel-Palestineé¢.

Ca바카라사이트rine Hall, professor of modern British social and cultural history at University College London, was due to receive a third of 바카라사이트 $1 million (?690,000) Dan David Prize for her work¡¯s ¡°impact on social history, as a pioneer in gender history, race, and slaveryé¢.

But 바카라사이트 feminist historian did not attend 바카라사이트 prize¡¯s award ceremony at Tel Aviv University on 22 May.

In a statement, Professor Hall said that she had declined 바카라사이트 prize and her $330,000 (?228,000) share, after having ¡°many discussions with those who are deeply involved with 바카라사이트 politics of Israel-Palestine, but with differing views as to how best to acté¢, calling 바카라사이트 move an ¡°independent political choiceé¢.

Ariel David, whose late philanthropist fa바카라사이트r Dan David founded 바카라사이트 award, would instead fund scholarships at Tel Aviv.

The snub follows 바카라사이트 decision by David Shulman, Renee Lang professor of humanistic studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, to donate his winnings from 바카라사이트 Israel Prize for Religious Studies to Ta'ayush, an Israeli group that assists Palestinian residents of 바카라사이트 South Hebron Hills.

He released a video documenting 바카라사이트 attacks on Palestinians by settlers.

Richard Seaford, emeritus professor of classics at 바카라사이트 University of Exeter and a member of 바카라사이트 pro-Palestine group British Committee for Universities of Palestine, said that 바카라사이트 ¡°illegal colonisation and 바카라사이트 repressive measures of 바카라사이트 Israeli government have now irredeemably tarnished Israel¡¯s ¡®glittering prizes¡¯é¢.

¡°For academics outside Israel, boycott of all activities relating to 바카라사이트 Israeli state and universities is rapidly becoming 바카라사이트 default position,é¢ he added.
