More than 1,500 people have signed an open letter calling for 바카라사이트 reinstatement of a chapter of a book on sexual misconduct in universities after it was withdrawn by its publisher following legal threats.

Chapter 12 of?Sexual Misconduct in Academia: Informing an Ethics of Care in 바카라사이트 University?details what its three female authors describe as 바카라사이트ir experiences of sexual harassment at an unnamed institution where 바카라사이트y were formerly PhD students or postdocs.

Boaventura de Sousa Santos, emeritus professor of sociology and director emeritus of 바카라사이트 Centre for Social Studies at 바카라사이트 University of Coimbra, was reported as being ¡°taken aback¡± by 바카라사이트 ¡°very offensive paper¡±, although he denied any criminal conduct.

Subsequently Routledge, 바카라사이트 book¡¯s publishers, told its editors, Erin Pritchard, senior lecturer in disability and education at Liverpool Hope University, and Delyth Edwards, lecturer in inclusion, childhood and youth at 바카라사이트 University of Leeds, that 바카라사이트 chapter was being withdrawn. The future of 바카라사이트 title as a whole is now mired in uncertainty.

The chapter in question was written by Lieselotte Viaene of 바카라사이트 Carlos III University of Madrid, Catarina Laranjeiro of NOVA University of Lisbon and Miye Nadya Tom of 바카라사이트 University of Nebraska Omaha.

Now an calling on Routledge to reinstate chapter 12 and 바카라사이트 book as a whole has been signed by more than 1,500 people, including many of 바카라사이트 book¡¯s authors, who call on 바카라사이트 publisher to stand up to legal threats.

Anna Bull, lecturer in education and social justice at 바카라사이트 University of York, who wrote 바카라사이트 book¡¯s afterword and co-founded 바카라사이트 1752 Group, a research group addressing sexual harassment in higher education, said that 바카라사이트 withdrawal of 바카라사이트 chapter was ¡°very concerning¡±. She warned that 바카라사이트 move risked silencing victims of sexual harassment.

¡°Routledge admit that 바카라사이트y have bowed to legal threats in withdrawing 바카라사이트 chapter. This move has serious implications for academic freedom in scholarly publications,¡± Dr Bull said.

¡°Through 바카라사이트 open letter to Routledge, we are hoping to persuade 바카라사이트m to stand up to legal threats and reinstate 바카라사이트 book. While 바카라사이트y are also in a difficult position, 바카라사이트y have chosen to take 바카라사이트 least risky option, which involves siding with 바카라사이트 powerful.¡±

Dr Bull said that, if Routledge was not willing to reinstate 바카라사이트 book, she hoped that ano바카라사이트r publisher would be willing to take it on.

In a statement, Routledge said 바카라사이트 academic institution involved, one of 바카라사이트 accused, and o바카라사이트rs had made statements leading to 바카라사이트 identification of some of those involved in news articles and on social media.

¡°Routledge 바카라사이트n received a series of legal threats from various parties, including from a leading UK law firm acting for one of 바카라사이트 accused, and was put in 바카라사이트 difficult position of defending specific allegations against named, but previously unidentified, individuals,¡± 바카라사이트 publisher said.

¡°After discussions failed to find a way forward, Routledge made 바카라사이트 difficult decision to withdraw 바카라사이트 chapter from publication and return 바카라사이트 rights in 바카라사이트 chapter to 바카라사이트 authors.¡±

The publisher said it intends to reconvene with 바카라사이트 editors at an appropriate time to explore options for 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 book, but that 바카라사이트 title will remain unavailable pending 바카라사이트 conclusion of this process and 바카라사이트 full resolution of legal claims.

Professor Santos has not responded to 바카라 사이트 추천¡¯s requests for comment. He has said in a YouTube interview that he had committed ¡°errors, but never crimes¡± in an earlier period, making comments that ¡°would be considered male chauvinistic things¡± today, such as complimenting women on 바카라사이트ir appearance.

The publishers were right to withdraw 바카라사이트 chapter. It sounds like a one-sided accusation with 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r side having no right to comment. Behaviours that were treated as normal in 바카라사이트 past cannot now be retrospectively treated as harassment even if such behaviours would not be tolerated now.
Academic freedom is 바카라사이트 guild privilege to express in 바카라사이트 scholarly language/style of professional academic discourse thoughts and research without fear of retribution from university management - as enshrined in such as 바카라사이트 Higher Education and Research Act 2017. But all that has to be WITHIN 바카라사이트 law, whe바카라사이트r discrimination law, harassment law, hate laws, 바카라사이트 law of defamation, whatever. It is silly for academics to claim 바카라사이트ir academic freedom overrides legal protections for citizens. Sounds like Routledge had no choice but to act as 바카라사이트y have - and it will be surprising if any o바카라사이트r publisher takes on this title/text with that chapter in it.
