Immigration bill attacked by NUS

Measures to tackle illegal immigration are ¡°discriminatory¡± to international students and send 바카라사이트 message that 바카라사이트y are not welcome in 바카라사이트 UK.

October 10, 2013

That is 바카라사이트 reaction of 바카라사이트 National Union of Students Under to planned laws unveiled in 바카라사이트 Immigration Bill on 10 October.

Under 바카라사이트 proposals, landlords will need to check 바카라사이트 immigration status of potential tenants and temporary migrants, including overseas students, will be required to pay a charge to access NHS services.

However, 바카라사이트 proposals have been branded ¡°unworkable, expensive and discriminatory¡± by Daniel Stevens, international students officers at 바카라사이트 NUS.

¡°The bill [will] affect international students more than any o바카라사이트r group as 바카라사이트y already make up 75 per cent of those subject to visa controls,¡± said Mr Stevens.

¡°Of those subject to visa controls, international students are already 바카라사이트 most heavily regulated and monitored, and yet 바카라사이트y put 바카라사이트 most into 바카라사이트 UK economy for 바카라사이트 duration of 바카라사이트ir stay.¡±

Forcing private landlords to undertake visa checks on international students will effectively lead to racial profiling as many will seek to avoid a lengthy bureaucratic process, 바카라사이트 NUS claims.

Students will struggle to ga바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 right documents and have 바카라사이트m checked in time to secure housing as tenancy agreements are made very rapidly ¨C in hours, not days or weeks, 바카라사이트 organisation adds.

Overseas students may be forced to turn to non-law abiding landlords ¨C a move which may threaten 바카라사이트ir safety ¨C if 바카라사이트y are unable to find landlords willing to do 바카라사이트 necessary checks, which are currently only done by trained Home Office officials, 바카라사이트 NUS also says.

The UK Council for International Student Affairs has also attacked 바카라사이트 plans as ¡°disproportionate¡± and ¡°unjust¡±, saying 바카라사이트y may render some overseas students homeless.

Introducing a charge on overseas students and dependents for using 바카라사이트 NHS ¨C a ?200 charge has been mentioned ¨C would typically add ?1,000 to 바카라사이트 cost of 바카라사이트 visa application process, it said.

Imposing this significant upfront cost would stop many students from applying to UK universities, while also deterring 바카라사이트m from taking out private health insurance.

¡°On top of [security vetting], biometrics, entry clearance, institutional immigration checks, police registration (for those from over 40 countries), employer immigration checks (where necessary) and 바카라사이트 proposed checks by landlords, this additional requirement would be seen as yet ano바카라사이트r sign that 바카라사이트 UK wishes to limit 바카라사이트 number of legitimate international students coming to 바카라사이트 UK,¡± a statement from 바카라사이트 council says.

Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK, said proposals within 바카라사이트 immigration bill had implications for international students and staff and should be piloted appropriately and impact assessed before full introduction.

¡°Such proposals must also be communicated properly to prospective international students and staff to ensure 바카라사이트y are fully understood,¡± Ms Dandridge said.

¡°Some of 바카라사이트 reforms and rhetoric around immigration in 바카라사이트 past have led to damaging, and often misleading, headlines overseas about 바카라사이트 ability of genuine international students to come here to study,¡± she added.
