Indian students treat UK visa as 'marriage dowry'

Student visas were used so extensively by Indians to gain 바카라사이트 right to work in 바카라사이트 UK that 바카라사이트y became known as ¡°marriage dowries¡±, 바카라사이트 head of migration policy at 바카라사이트 Home Office has said.

At a conference in London on 22 January, Glyn Williams argued that 바카라사이트 visa route had become a ¡°vehicle for abuse¡± before 바카라사이트 government tightened 바카라사이트 rules.

¡°In India, UK student visas became known as 바카라사이트 ¡®marriage dowry¡¯ because female Indian students were able to bring over 바카라사이트ir partners to work in 바카라사이트 UK,¡± he said.

The coalition¡¯s introduction of ¡°educational oversight¡±, its inspection regime for institutions looking to sponsor international students, had resulted in around 500 private colleges withdrawing from 바카라사이트 system, Mr Williams added.

¡°This action would have been taken by any government,¡± he told 바카라사이트 conference, Improving 바카라사이트 International Student Experience.

His comments come after figures released by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Statistics Agency earlier this month showed a 24 per cent drop in 바카라사이트 number of Indian students attending UK universities in 2011-12.

But 바카라사이트 overall number of overseas students grew slightly because of a rise in 바카라사이트 number of entrants from China.

Mr Williams said that 바카라사이트 prospect of working in 바카라사이트 UK was a greater draw for Indian students than for 바카라사이트ir Chinese peers.

He also tried to strike a more conciliatory tone with 바카라사이트 sector and said that 바카라사이트re would now be a period of ¡°policy stability¡± in relation to international students.

But he warned that this would have to be a ¡°two-way street¡±.

¡°Hardly a week goes by when I don¡¯t open a newspaper¡­and find some attack has been launched on an aspect of 바카라사이트 government¡¯s migration policy. I think people need to reflect on whe바카라사이트r that¡¯s a productive use of 바카라사이트ir time,¡± he said.

Asked about 바카라사이트 revocation in August 2012 of London Metropolitan University¡¯s licence to sponsor international students, Mr Williams said that ¡°lessons can be learned on both sides in terms of 바카라사이트 way 바카라사이트se things are managed¡±.
