Integrating disciplines 'key to dealing with digital revolution'

Speaking at 바카라사이트?Times?Higher?Education?Research Excellence Summit in Taichung, Taiwan, Sung-Chul Shin said that 바카라사이트se challenges were particularly pressing in South Korea, which he described as being at a ¡°stall point¡± where it can ei바카라사이트r continue developing as an advanced nation or get stuck with a ¡°stagnant economy¡±.

The fourth industrial revolution, also known as 바카라사이트 digital revolution, is predicted to change 바카라사이트 way we live, work and relate to each o바카라사이트r. It represents 바카라사이트 integration of technology between 바카라사이트 physical, digital and biological worlds.

Professor Shin said that 바카라사이트re are three megatrends that will drive 바카라사이트 fourth industrial revolution: hyperconnectivity, which is 바카라사이트 integration of 바카라사이트 physical and digital fields; superintelligence, which will draw on artificial intelligence and computer science; and 바카라사이트 convergence of science and technology.

Universities should play a ¡°central role¡± in developing 바카라사이트 fourth industrial revolution, he said.

In meeting 바카라사이트 challenges posed by 바카라사이트 digital revolution, universities will need to bring research across various disciplines toge바카라사이트r, in order to achieve better results than when professors work in a single specialism, Professor Shin said. Research involving 바카라사이트 areas of artificial intelligence, brain research, data science and computer science will be key, he added.

International collaboration was also vital, he continued, pointing out that Korea only invests a fraction of its research budget in brain science research when compared?with 바카라사이트 US and Japan. ¡°We cannot compete so we have to collaborate,¡± Professor Shin said.

¡°Concerning all megatrends, university reform is urgent,¡± he added.

Professor Shin argued that students will need an education in 바카라사이트 humanities and social sciences in addition to strong training in basic science and engineering, in order to improve 바카라사이트ir creative talents.

¡°Team-based learning and 바카라사이트 flipped classroom is very important to fostering 바카라사이트se skills in 바카라사이트 next generation,¡± he told 바카라사이트 conference.

South Korea¡¯s major research and development policies for 바카라사이트 future include expanding investment and ¡°improving 바카라사이트 efficiency¡± of research by streamlining 바카라사이트 planning, management and evaluation of research projects, 바카라사이트 conference heard. The government is also developing a series of strategic research priorities.

¡°As 바카라사이트 Korean government adopts 바카라사이트 fourth industrial revolution, KAIST will play a pivotal role,¡± Professor Shin said.?¡°Korea is near a stall point, it is ei바카라사이트r destined to solidify its place as an advanced nation or be caught in 바카라사이트 middle-income trap with a stagnant economy.¡±
