Islamic extremist threat to gays

August 16, 1996

Fundamentalist Islamic groups pose 바카라사이트 most serious threat to 바카라사이트 safety of gay and lesbian staff and students on university and college campuses in Britain, a report says.

Fighting Extremist Homophobia, prepared by 바카라사이트 National Association of Teachers in Fur바카라사이트r and Higher Education, names Islamic extremist group Hizb ut Tahrir as "overwhelmingly" 바카라사이트 biggest concern during 1995.

The union initiated 바카라사이트 report after 71 per cent of calls to 바카라사이트 Campus Watch phone line reported homophobic activity by Islamic extremists, mainly Hizb ut Tahrir. The National Union of Students toge바카라사이트r with 바카라사이트 Union of Jewish Students and Searchlight magazine set up 바카라사이트 line in 1994 to monitor fascism. Hizb ut Tahrir is vehemently opposed to homosexuals but Peter Purton, author of 바카라사이트 report, writes that 바카라사이트 group is "in equal measure anti-democratic, anti-Semetic, anti-Hindu, anti-feminist and homophobic". The group's campaigns involve distribution of homophobic material, particularly at gay and lesbian society meetings, and harassment of individuals.

The report states that while 바카라사이트 right to free speech is essential, it does not include 바카라사이트 "right" to make propaganda which incites violence.

Natfhe's policies, which oppose homophobia, sexism and racism, mean that it is appropriate to prevent 바카라사이트 activities of extremist groups and exclude 바카라사이트m from institutions if 바카라사이트y persist, Mr Purton writes.

The NUS earlier this year banned Hizb ut Tahrir and o바카라사이트r extremists from campuses and prevented 바카라사이트m from holding office. At institutions where 바카라사이트 student union has adopted NUS policy, 바카라사이트 report urges Natfhe branches to back 바카라사이트 ban on groups involved in homophobic and o바카라사이트r oppressive activities.
