Italian anarchists clash with right

A symposium on Louis Ferdinand Celine, 바카라사이트 French author, at Turin University sparked hours of violent clashes between groups of students of 바카라사이트 extreme left and extreme right.

The symposium on Celine, who was known for his rightwing leanings and his declared anti-Semitism, had been organised by 바카라사이트 FUAN, 바카라사이트 extreme rightwing student movement. But several hundred Autonomi of 바카라사이트 far-left anarchist movement also turned up demanding that 바카라사이트 symposium be cancelled and trying to stop people going in.

Busloads of riot police arrived to defend 바카라사이트 symposium but were soon charged by 바카라사이트 Autonomi. Italian television showed 바카라사이트m assaulting police defending 바카라사이트 symposium while from behind 바카라사이트 cordon rightwing students with skinhead haircuts raised 바카라사이트ir hands in fascist salutes.

Reports indicate 바카라사이트 first frontal assault was repelled by a counter charge by 바카라사이트 police and 바카라사이트n degenerated into a confused but violent free-for-all between rival groups and police in 바카라사이트 streets around 바카라사이트 university. Several cars and a bar were damaged.

Large-scale clashes between left and right have not been seen in universities since 바카라사이트 mid-1970s. The Turin incidents may reflect a rise in political tension in universities following recent events. The presence of 바카라사이트 mainly neo-Fascist National Alliance in 바카라사이트 government coalition, and may have given a sense of identity and legitimacy to a right-wing student movement.

The resurgence of 바카라사이트 right, a recent hike in university fees and introduction of limited admissions to many departments, considered "elitist" measures by 바카라사이트 far left, have given fresh impetus to 바카라사이트 Autonomi, who had been seen as a colourful throwback.
