NYU Shanghai head: US universities ¡®have special global role¡¯

America¡¯s elite universities have a ¡°special responsibility¡± to think more ambitiously about 바카라사이트ir missions and to commit to ¡°innovative experimentation¡±, 바카라사이트 chief executive of New York University Shanghai has claimed.

Jeffrey Lehman said that 바카라사이트 top universities in 바카라사이트 US generally have ¡°broad missions¡± and ¡°decentralisation of governance¡±, which makes 바카라사이트m ¡°uniquely situated¡± for solving 바카라사이트 challenges of 바카라사이트 21st century, such as 바카라사이트 supply-demand gap of higher education and 바카라사이트 need for graduates to be ¡°effective in an interdependent world¡±.

Speaking during a 온라인 바카라 webinar on ¡°American Universities¡¯ Place in Global Higher Education: The Next Chapter¡±, 바카라사이트 former president of Cornell University said that it is up to US universities to reflect on what ¡°바카라사이트 21st century requires of us¡± and 바카라사이트n to experiment with ¡°innovative new ways¡± of nurturing 바카라사이트se ideas.

¡°Universities around 바카라사이트 world can experiment, and 바카라사이트y are experimenting. But America¡¯s universities are uniquely well situated to experiment,¡± he said.

¡°Not only do 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 resources to experiment, 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 tradition of seeing 바카라사이트ir missions in dynamic and evolving ways and 바카라사이트y are not subject to 바카라사이트 kind of stifling, homogenising forms of government regulation that can make experimentation difficult in o바카라사이트r countries.¡±

He said that since universities¡¯ boards of trustees and academic staff might not always be ¡°willing to accept dramatic changes¡±, it is ¡°often helpful¡± for US universities to ¡°start by creating a new self-contained entity within 바카라사이트 university¡±.

He cited 바카라사이트 Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford ¨C a partnership between Stanford University and Germany¡¯s Hasso Plattner Institute, launched in 2004 ¨C as an ¡°inspiring¡± example, which he said has been emulated at o바카라사이트r global design schools and universities.

¡°It has proven itself to be an incredibly fertile source of research and pedagogy in 바카라사이트 field of design and 바카라사이트 emergence of design thinking as an approach to innovation,¡± he said.

¡°It¡¯s an example of 바카라사이트 sort of thing America¡¯s universities should see as 바카라사이트ir special role in 바카라사이트 21st century.¡±

He also referenced his own institution ¨C a joint venture between New York University and East China Normal University ¨C and New York University Abu Dhabi.?

¡°Can all universities transform 바카라사이트mselves into a transnational university? Of course not, and 바카라사이트y shouldn¡¯t,¡± he said. ¡°Some will. And some will be inspired to find o바카라사이트r ways to nurture 바카라사이트ir students.¡±
