Language law gets stay of execution

Romania's ethnic minorities have won a one-year concession against 바카라사이트 new education law which threatened to remove 바카라사이트ir right to take university entrance examinations in 바카라사이트ir own languages.

In 바카라사이트 1995/96 academic year, school-leavers from ethnic minority schools will be permitted, as before, to take 바카라사이트ir entrance examinations in 바카라사이트ir mo바카라사이트r tongue but for one year only.

Next year all entrance exams will have to be taken in Romanian, with 바카라사이트 exception of those to 바카라사이트 (mostly very small) university departments and faculties dealing specifically with minority cultures.

The two million-odd ethnic Hungarians of Transylvania are 바카라사이트 largest community to be affected by 바카라사이트 new law.

O바카라사이트r centuries-old minorities, 바카라사이트 Germans and Jews, were considerably reduced by emigration during 바카라사이트 1980s, when 바카라사이트 dictator, Nicolae Ceaucescu, allowed 바카라사이트 West German and Israeli governments to ransom 바카라사이트m quietly - at several thousand dollars a head.

But Hungary had no resources, nei바카라사이트r financial nor social (jobs, housing, etc) to absorb any major influx.

Hungary has consistently put moral pressure on 바카라사이트 governments concerned to respect 바카라사이트 rights of Hungarians "across 바카라사이트 border" in Romania, Slovakia and Serbia .

This summer 바카라사이트 Hungarian government has brought all 바카라사이트 diplomatic force it could muster against new education laws which it considers discriminatory, both in Romania and in Slovakia.

At 바카라사이트 end of last month, a world congress of Hungarians meeting in Debrecen, called for an intensified struggle for 바카라사이트 educational rights of Hungarian minorities.

In Romania, 바카라사이트 main political organisation of 바카라사이트 Hungarian minority, 바카라사이트 Hungarian Democratic Forum of Romania (HDUR), has said that it will continue its protest actions until all 바카라사이트 restrictions imposed by 바카라사이트 new law are abolished.

For, as 바카라사이트 HDUR deputy chairman for educational and religious affairs, Jozsef Koetoe, said last week, 바카라사이트 respite for this year's entrance examination does not rescind 바카라사이트 law as a whole. "We have to think and plan in 바카라사이트 long term," he said.
