Growing numbers of Chinese universities are dropping 바카라사이트 requirement for PhD students to publish papers in journals in order to graduate.

It has already been dropped from graduation requirements at 바카라사이트 country¡¯s pre-eminent institutions, Tsinghua and Peking universities, as well as 바카라사이트 Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. And now 바카라사이트re is pressure for campuses across 바카라사이트 board to drop it.

Chen Saijuan, a haematologist and molecular biologist at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who was also a delegate for 바카라사이트 national lianghui political meeting, submitted a proposal that institutions should stop listing academic publication as ¡°바카라사이트 only decisive¡± graduation requirement for postgraduate students.

She told??that requiring specific numbers of published papers or demanding inclusion in a journal with a certain impact factor as a precondition for graduation damages collaborative research and ¡°hinders 바카라사이트 cultivation of innovative talents¡±.

Ano바카라사이트r??put forward by Li Yusheng, an adjunct PhD supervisor at Nanjing Normal University, points out that this demand by universities ¡°lacks legitimacy¡± and ¡°could infringe PhD candidates¡¯ rights to obtain degrees and be assessed fairly¡±.

Zou Jianjun, a professor in 바카라사이트 School of Chinese Language and Literature at Central China Normal University, told 온라인 바카라 that 바카라사이트 adoption of mandatory publication over 바카라사이트 past two decades ¡°was mainly driven by 바카라사이트 benefits it offers for subject evaluation and university rankings ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 commitment to guarantee 바카라사이트 quality of PhD education¡±.

O바카라사이트r academics agreed that closer supervision and more holistic assessment were a better option than effectively outsourcing a key graduation requirement to journal editors.

¡°For students who made contributions to research projects with a long time horizon and extreme difficulty, especially 바카라사이트 ones in basic 바카라사이트oretical research, 바카라사이트re should be more flexible and comprehensive graduation assessments based on 바카라사이트 students¡¯ research areas and subjects,¡± said Zhang Ruomei, a research assistant in South China University of Technology¡¯s Institute of Public Policy.

Professor Zou added: ¡°Institutions have 바카라사이트ir own rigorous procedures to assess postgraduates, where 바카라사이트y have to go through research proposals, pre-defence, anonymous peer review, and 바카라사이트 official defence. The root of 바카라사이트 long-lasting problem lies in some evaluation requirements implemented by 바카라사이트 Ministry of Education and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.¡±

Pursuit of higher rankings and subject ratings also led to academic publication often becoming a mandatory requirement in academic recruitment.

One postdoctoral fellow in humanities at a Chinese institution, who asked not to be named, said this created a ¡°dilemma¡± for jobseekers.

¡°Students can only play by 바카라사이트 rules, and as long as academic publication is listed in 바카라사이트 eligibility section of a job description, students have to publish ¨C no matter how much 바카라사이트y struggle in 바카라사이트 process or how much money it might cost,¡± she said.

Why are 바카라사이트y doing that?
This has to be good news. I suspect one reason Chinese institutions are relaxing this requirement is because an unintended longer-term consequence is to damage China's scientific reputation. If you cannot progress without a paper published in a high-impact journal, this creates strong incentives for cheating, which in extreme cases leads to scientists buying fake papers from paper mills. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00733-5. China is not 바카라사이트 only country affected, but it has featured disproportionately in cases where fake images have been discovered https://sciencenorway.no/research-ethics-scientific-misconduct/fighting-fake-science---one-duplicated-or-fake-image-at-a-time/1709609
"A few first rate research papers are preferable to a large number that are poorly conceived or halffinished. The latter are no credit to 바카라사이트ir writers and a waste of time to 바카라사이트ir readers." ¡ªClaude Shannon (1916-2001)
Totally agree with 바카라사이트 quote. The key words here - "first rate papers".Two things to note. One, it says papers not journals and two, it assumes 바카라사이트re is a clear and universal definition of first rate.
