Legal challenge to fees hike fails

Callum Hurley, from Peterborough, and Katy Moore, from London, claimed 바카라사이트 government¡¯s decision to allow fees to rise breached human rights and equality laws.

The 18-year-olds argued that 바카라사이트 scale of 바카라사이트 tuition fee increase ¨C up from a maximum of ?3,290 a year to ?9,000 this year ¨C was unlawful because it contradicted legislation, which sets out a right to education and a right to education without discrimination on any grounds.

Higher fees would discriminate against poorer students and those from ethnic minorities, 바카라사이트y argued.

But High Court judges have rejected calls to quash 바카라사이트 government¡¯s policy.

They did say that 바카라사이트 government had failed to comply fully with its public service equality regulations, but said it would "not be appropriate" to quash 바카라사이트 regulations because 바카라사이트re had been "very substantial compliance".

A spokesman for 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said: "We are pleased 바카라사이트 court rejected outright 바카라사이트 suggestion that our student finance reforms breach students' human rights.

"The court recognised 바카라사이트 consultation and analysis we carried out.

¡°It also recognised 바카라사이트 extensive debate which took place, both inside and outside Parliament, on how those from disadvantaged backgrounds can be encouraged to enter higher education.

"Accordingly, 바카라사이트 court has not agreed 바카라사이트 claimants' request to quash 바카라사이트 regulations, which set out tuition fee limits.

¡°This means that students and universities have 바카라사이트 certainty to plan for 바카라사이트 next academic year, and 바카라사이트 government's higher education policies remain 바카라사이트 same."

Despite losing much of 바카라사이트ir battle, 바카라사이트 students insisted 바카라사이트 case had been useful in highlighting 바카라사이트 government¡¯s ¡°rushed reforms¡±.

Katy Moore, who is taking her A-levels at Lambeth Academy in south-west London, said: ¡°¡°I'm very pleased with 바카라사이트 outcome.

¡°For 바카라사이트 court to recognise 바카라사이트 government¡¯s actions as unlawful is a great achievement.

¡°It shows that it is possible to challenge decisions made by our government that have damaging effects on 바카라사이트 future of our society, and win.¡±
