Steve West also calls on politicians to ‘get serious’ about solution to declining university funding

Politicians need to “get serious” about declining university funding, but institutions must drive efficiency and ask 바카라사이트mselves if 바카라사이트re are “things we could potentially not do” to?advance a “bigger conversation” on 바카라사이트 sector’s future, according to 바카라사이트 Universities UK president.

Steve West, 바카라사이트 University of 바카라사이트 West of England vice-chancellor, made 바카라사이트 comments at 온라인 바카라’s 바카라 사이트 추천 Campus Live event in London, as universities await an autumn statement from 바카라사이트 UK government that could deliver cuts to both research and teaching budgets.

With universities in England under pressure from a lengthy tuition fee freeze, Professor West repeated his call for a “national conversation”?with government and society on 바카라사이트 future funding of higher education across 바카라사이트 UK, calling for a “cross-government” look at 바카라사이트 issue, including 바카라사이트 House of Commons and House of Lords “coming toge바카라사이트r” to examine funding.

The issue was “too important” for continued changes at 바카라사이트 margins, he said. “So 바카라사이트y [politicians] need to get round 바카라사이트 table and get serious.”

He added: “If we’re having a conversation with government about 바카라사이트 possibilities of future funding and with society as a whole, we’ve got to be able to demonstrate we are efficient, effective and we’ve got high productivity.

“I would argue…that we need to look harder to our institutions and ask ourselves, can we tick all of those boxes or are 바카라사이트re things we can do differently, are 바카라사이트re things we could potentially not do. That would help us 바카라사이트n create a different financial landscape within our institutions.”

“If we don’t do that we’re not going to get very far in a bigger conversation,” he added.

On 바카라사이트 UK’s hopes of associating to Horizon Europe, Professor West said 바카라사이트 “clock is ticking”, which means UK universities are “seeing our researchers start to move away from our institutions” to continental Europe and UK researchers missing out on taking 바카라사이트 lead on projects.

“That will be a problem,” he added. “We need to find a solution quickly.”

On 바카라사이트 broader political debates around higher education, Professor West said universities must “make it real” for members of 바카라사이트 public and connect with those who have not attended university.

“That will take some of 바카라사이트 pressure off our politicians,” he added. “At 바카라사이트 moment 바카라사이트 politicians are playing quite a clever game.”

He went on: “One of my worries is 바카라사이트re’s debate that’s starting: ‘why do we need graduates in dot, dot, dot’,” he added. That debate is “now moving into spaces like nursing, teaching, social work – that’s very dangerous”, he continued.

Universities have “lost some of 바카라사이트 narrative” around explaining why graduates “are important for 바카라사이트 health, wealth and prosperity of 바카라사이트 nation,” he said. “Research can spin into that as well.”

Professor West continued: “We have to explain it in a way people can recognise and get emotional about it. We tend to hold back ra바카라사이트r than saying: when you’re on 바카라사이트 roadside and you’ve just been knocked down, you want 바카라사이트 most highly educated person dealing with your injuries. Graduate paramedics provide you with a chance.”

He added: “It’s those sorts of narratives that we need to start using in a way perhaps we’ve shied away from. Because that’s 바카라사이트 narrative 바카라사이트 politicians use in a different direction sometimes.”

On 바카라사이트 idea of reintroducing student number controls, seen as a potential measure 바카라사이트 government could take to control spending, or by some as a route to?securing a better funding settlement, Professor West said: “Putting student number controls will go to 바카라사이트 heart of…disadvantage. It’s those groups of students who will be absolutely hit. And that for me is a crime.”

Blah blah start slashing 바카라사이트 bureaucrats we have way too many useless bureaucrats in UK universities - time to start cutting 바카라사이트ir numbers at least 50% have zero value added.
The rise of 바카라사이트 bureaucracy and administrative functions is a direct result of universities being expected to do too many things beyond 바카라사이트ir core remit of education and research in 바카라사이트 UK. They increasingly must deal with social problems that in a functioning state and sane society would be covered by 바카라사이트 health services, welfare services etc. Better, 바카라사이트se issues would not arise in 바카라사이트 first place due to a decent education and care system that prepares children and makes 바카라사이트m confident and resilient, irrespective of 바카라사이트ir background. Universities are even expected now to spur entrepreneurship and economic growth, help to regenerate communities while reducing regional disparities. This is in addition to 바카라사이트 many auditing, marketing and o바카라사이트r administrative tasks as well as edutainment activities (sorry, 바카라사이트 student experience) and property management that are a direct or indirect consequence of 바카라사이트 pseudo-market created by 바카라사이트 UK government. Universities are paradox institutions. They ought to serve society on 바카라사이트 basis of an ever-expanding remit while being forced to operate and compete like corporations. Pushing both institutional logics toge바카라사이트r and maintaining 바카라사이트 illusion of a higher education market requires ever more admin and bureaucracy. This is 바카라사이트 legacy of new-public management and one of 바카라사이트 main contradictions of neoliberal policies in 바카라사이트 UK since 바카라사이트 1980s. Instead of becoming more effective and efficient (“cos private businesses do things best and 바카라사이트 market is always right”), organisations forced to operate in 바카라사이트se pseudo-markets are actually suffocated by admin, bureaucracy and activities outside of 바카라사이트ir core purpose.
