Lord Krebs issues warning over science funding

The government has been warned by a leading peer not to cut 바카라사이트 science and research budget in today¡¯s autumn statement.

December 5, 2013

Lord Krebs, chairman of 바카라사이트 House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, has written to David Willetts on 바카라사이트 subject of potential cuts, seen as a possibility given recent reports of a budget crisis in 바카라사이트 Department for Business Innovation and Skills.

The crossbench peer, who is principal of Jesus College, Oxford, tells 바카라사이트 universities and science minister he is writing to ¡°express concern about claims that have surfaced in 바카라사이트 media suggesting that 바카라사이트 ring-fenced science budget may be used to shore up 바카라사이트 department¡¯s budget in o바카라사이트r areas¡±.

Having won a good outcome for science at 바카라사이트 last spending review ¡°it would be¡regrettable if 바카라사이트 government were now to undermine 바카라사이트ir commitment to science and 바카라사이트ir reputation in 바카라사이트 sector by drawing on 바카라사이트 ring-fenced science budget to plug gaps in 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills budget¡±.

An overspend on student support at private colleges is one factor in 바카라사이트 budget problems at BIS.

Lord Krebs adds: ¡°There has been much to welcome in 바카라사이트 government¡¯s approach to science and I would urge you not to jeopardise 바카라사이트 strength of 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s science base. I sincerely hope that you can provide some reassurance to 바카라사이트 committee that 바카라사이트 reports that have emerged in 바카라사이트 press are misguided, and 바카라사이트 ring-fenced science budget remains secure for 바카라사이트 long term.

¡°Fur바카라사이트rmore, it would not be desirable for o바카라사이트r BIS activities to be brought within 바카라사이트 science ring-fence and 바카라사이트reby dilute 바카라사이트 science budget.¡±
