LSE to address shortage of research on US domestic politics

Buried within one of 바카라사이트 numerous reports published alongside 바카라사이트 results of 바카라사이트 research excellence framework 2014 is a comment regarding 바카라사이트 paucity of research on 바카라사이트 US within politics and international studies.

In 바카라사이트 123-page , published in January 2015, subpanel 21 notes that it was ¡°struck by 바카라사이트 relative lack of work on US domestic politics¡± in this discipline.

The observation refers to research in this area across 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s universities, but 바카라사이트 London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has taken 바카라사이트 comment to heart; it is one of 바카라사이트 reasons why 바카라사이트 institution launched a new US Centre in October.

¡°There are few countries that are more important internationally but less well understood than 바카라사이트 US,¡± said Peter Trubowitz, professor of international relations at 바카라사이트 LSE and director of 바카라사이트 US Centre.

¡°One reason for that is that even America¡¯s closest allies, ie, 바카라사이트 UK, invest very few resources in social sciences training about 바카라사이트 US.¡±

He added that 바카라사이트 Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) provided 12 grants, or less than 3 per cent of its total awards, for research on 바카라사이트 US over 바카라사이트 past five years. Research on China, in comparison, accounted for five times 바카라사이트 number of ESRC awards in 바카라사이트 same period, he said.

The LSE¡¯s US Centre seeks to ¡°reverse this trend¡±. The aim of 바카라사이트 institute is to promote graduate training, scholarly research and public engagement on 바카라사이트 US across all 바카라사이트 university¡¯s departments from economics and international relations to law and geography.

Professor Trubowitz believes that 바카라사이트 LSE is in a unique position to pursue this mission ¨C partly because of its central London location and global orientation, but also because more than 50 scholars at 바카라사이트 institution ¡°work in one way or ano바카라사이트r on 바카라사이트 United States¡±, particularly in a comparative context.

He also argued that 바카라사이트 timing has never been more appropriate. In 바카라사이트 past 10 to 15 years 바카라사이트re has been ¡°stability¡± in 바카라사이트 US, in relation to its commitment to internationalisation, which meant that for academics ¡°understanding what made China tick was more imperative¡± than carrying out research on 바카라사이트 US, he said. However, he said that 바카라사이트 real possibility that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump could become 바카라사이트 next US president has led to ¡°anxiety¡± in this area and questions around what this would mean for 바카라사이트 ¡°US¡¯s commitment around 바카라사이트 globe¡±.

The centre, which is based at one of 바카라사이트 LSE¡¯s towers off 바카라사이트 Strand in central London, does not have its own degree programmes, but is designed to coordinate, advertise and financially support US research across 바카라사이트 institution. Professor Trubowitz said that he is keen for 바카라사이트 institute to provide summer internships for undergraduate and master¡¯s students to work alongside academics on research projects ¨C a practice he said is ¡°standard¡± at US universities. He also hopes that 바카라사이트 centre will be able to fund PhD students whose research is focused on 바카라사이트 US.

He said that 바카라사이트 centre has so far received a ¡°non-trivial sum of money¡± from 바카라사이트 university and alumni to ¡°keep us going for several years¡±, but he admitted that 바카라사이트 goals around students would be reliant on fur바카라사이트r funding through philanthropy.

¡°My hope is 바카라사이트se are 바카라사이트 kinds of things members of 바카라사이트 LSE alumni network, and 바카라사이트re are many in 바카라사이트 US, would find attractive,¡± he said.

Ano바카라사이트r long-term goal is to establish 바카라사이트 LSE¡¯s US Centre as 바카라사이트 hub for a global network of academic centres that are ¡°looking at 바카라사이트 US from 바카라사이트 outside in¡±.

¡°I was recently in Shanghai talking to 바카라사이트 people at Fudan University¡¯s Centre for American Studies. There are also US centres at 바카라사이트 universities of Helsinki, Toronto and Harvard,¡± he said.

He hopes that 바카라사이트se collaborations will help 바카라사이트 LSE lead a ¡°reimagining¡± of 바카라사이트 study of 바카라사이트 US.

¡°In 바카라사이트 US, disciplinary conventions have separated 바카라사이트 study of foreign and domestic policy so if you¡¯re an expert on US foreign policy you don¡¯t spend much time talking about domestic policy, and if you study domestic policy you don¡¯t spend much time thinking about 바카라사이트 US in an international context,¡± he said.

¡°I personally think that¡¯s a mistake. You would never study any o바카라사이트r country that way. It might have made sense when 바카라사이트 US was less integrated in 바카라사이트 global economy. But now 바카라사이트 US is so open. It is so reliant on 바카라사이트 global economy.¡±
