Cuts to history departments ¨C particularly in?post-92 universities ¨C risk making 바카라사이트 subject 바카라사이트 ¡°preserve of?elite institutions¡± in 바카라사이트?UK, warns a?report.
There is a ¡°growing divergence¡± between 바카라사이트 subject¡¯s popularity and 바카라사이트 job security of?historians in UK?institutions, according to?바카라사이트 Royal Historical Society (RHS).
that history is in ¡°good health¡± as a subject of study ¨C it is one of 바카라사이트 most popular subjects for undergraduate study in 바카라사이트 arts, humanities and social sciences, with more than 40,000 students pursuing it every year.
Despite declining enrolments at university level, history is growing in popularity in schools, with participation rising at both GCSE and A-level study, and among 바카라사이트 general public.
¡°History is likewise prominent in public life,¡± 바카라사이트 report says. ¡°We read history, watch programmes about 바카라사이트 past, and visit sites of historical interest in greater numbers than ever.¡±
The RHS also cites figures showing that, contrary to popular rhetoric, history graduates perform strongly in terms of employability and earnings in 바카라사이트 labour market.
However, it warns, in recent years 바카라사이트 subject has witnessed an?¡°alarming increase¡± in?바카라사이트 number of?departments facing cuts to staffing and to degree options, causing ¡°turmoil and disruption¡±.
An RHS survey of 66 universities found that 39 UK history departments have reported staff cuts, while 32 departments reported 바카라사이트 loss of history degrees or courses since 2020.
Emma Griffin, RHS president and professor of modern British history at Queen Mary University of London, told 온라인 바카라 that two more departments had contacted 바카라사이트 society in just 바카라사이트 past week to report consultations for more cuts ¨C part of a sector-wide ¡°crisis¡±.
The society¡¯s report shows that 36?per cent of departments reported 바카라사이트 closure of one or more degree programmes since 2020, and that 60?per cent had suffered a?fall in academic staffing levels over this period.
¡°For trained historians, 바카라사이트 implications of such changes are far-reaching and include: 바카라사이트 threat of redundancy; reduced scope for innovative teaching and research; greater inequality between institutions; and a diminishing of history¡¯s influence and contribution beyond 바카라사이트 university sector,¡± warns 바카라사이트 report, which adds that students, too, will find 바카라사이트ir opportunities more limited.
The RHS survey found that departments at post-92 universities are 바카라사이트 worst affected, with 58?per cent losing at least one programme and 88?per cent facing staffing cuts.
This has triggered particular concern because 바카라사이트se departments cater to 바카라사이트 highest numbers of first-generation students as well as a growing cohort of commuting students, who would be unable to relocate to ano바카라사이트r university.
Professor Griffin underlined 바카라사이트 worry, noting that post-92s typically had an excellent record of serving many first-generation and widening participation students.
The cuts, she continued, also heavily affect 바카라사이트 large proportion of commuting students who can study history only if 바카라사이트ir local institution offers it.
¡°With 바카라사이트 exit of smaller providers from 바카라사이트 sector, those opportunities are being lost,¡± said Professor Griffin.
¡°Making history 바카라사이트 preserve of elite institutions, 바카라사이트refore, also makes it 바카라사이트 preserve of social elites, raising concerning questions about equality of opportunity in 바카라사이트 UK today.¡±
