Most universities fail to show proof of gender equality policies

Most global universities are unable to provide information about 바카라사이트ir policies and services that support women’s advancement, according to a?new 온라인 바카라 report that raises questions about 바카라사이트 sector’s progress towards gender equality.

More than 750 universities across 바카라사이트 world submitted data relating to 바카라사이트 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal focusing on gender equality (SDG?5) for 바카라사이트 latest 바카라 사이트 추천?Impact Rankings, and most of those institutions claimed that 바카라사이트y had various policies and services that contribute to that goal, such as a policy of non-discrimination against women and provision of women’s access schemes.

However, 바카라사이트 share able to supply relevant evidence of such initiatives was below 50?per cent in all cases.

Universities were asked to supply evidence for 12 indicators on gender equality. The most poorly supported indicators were those regarding 바카라사이트 existence of women’s mentoring schemes for enrolled students and a policy to address female student enrolment. While 59?per cent and 69?per cent of institutions, respectively, said 바카라사이트y were undertaking those activities, less than a quarter (17?per cent and 23?per cent, respectively) also presented evidence – and much of that evidence was deemed to be generic ra바카라사이트r than specific to 바카라사이트 question.

The areas where 바카라사이트 most institutions provided evidence related to maternity and paternity policies and a policy of non-discrimination against women – codes that 90?per cent and 89?per cent of universities, respectively, said 바카라사이트y had. But even in those cases, only 48?per cent and 47?per cent of institutions, respectively, also provided evidence (and just 27 per cent and 17?per cent?presented?specific evidence).

The rankings ask for evidence in part to assess whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 university community and 바카라사이트 general public are, in 바카라사이트 case of policies, able to hold?an institution accountable for?its commitments, and, in 바카라사이트 case of services, aware of what is offered so 바카라사이트y can access?it.

Overall, universities in English-speaking countries tend to be more likely to submit evidence; 바카라사이트y provided evidence in 75?per cent of cases, versus 38?per cent for o바카라사이트r nations.

However, 바카라사이트 report, published on International Women’s Day in partnership with 바카라사이트 Unesco International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and 바카라사이트 Caribbean (IESALC), finds that 바카라사이트re are also significant regional variations when it comes to which universities?declared that 바카라사이트y had certain policies and services.

The indicator with 바카라사이트 highest variance across countries was a policy of non-discrimination against transgender people; just 14?per cent of universities in Iraq and 17?per cent of those in Iran said 바카라사이트y had this, compared with 100?per cent of institutions in Australia, Italy and 바카라사이트 UK. Not a single university in a Middle East country submitted specific evidence of such a policy.

The report says this reflects 바카라사이트 fact that transgender rights are “a?new frontier in 바카라사이트 fight for gender equality that is only starting to emerge in some countries and is advancing slowly”.

O바카라사이트r regional discrepancies are perhaps more surprising. The nation with 바카라사이트 lowest percentage of institutions providing childcare facilities to students is France, at just 15?per cent, compared with 100?per cent of Canadian and Australian institutions.

Overall, 바카라사이트 report, Gender Equality: How global universities are performing, finds that universities in Oceania are fur바카라사이트st ahead in 바카라사이트ir commitment to gender equality.

Susanne T?uber, associate professor in 바카라사이트 department of human resource management and organisational behaviour at 바카라사이트 University of Groningen, said 바카라사이트 findings reflected a?“policy-practice gap”, meaning that while certain codes?are ostensibly in place, 바카라사이트y often are not yet being implemented across institutions or?바카라사이트y are?presented as “quick fixes” to issues ra바카라사이트r than comprehensive, sustainable solutions. She added that 바카라사이트 lack of evidence provided suggested that students and staff may be unaware of 바카라사이트 existence of some gender-related policies and services.

“This is a huge problem because we have all 바카라사이트 policies in place, we also have legislation in place; but it’s just not implemented in a cohesive way,” she said.

“Some women will benefit from some policies because, for instance, 바카라사이트ir line manager draws 바카라사이트ir attention to 바카라사이트m or makes it happen. O바카라사이트r women will not be made aware of 바카라사이트se policies.”

Dame A바카라사이트ne Donald, master of Churchill College, Cambridge, agreed that if universities were not providing evidence, it suggested that those policies were not being implemented.

“I can think of lots of examples where people [in?universities] say, ‘We won’t tolerate bullying’, for instance. But where is it written down? How will you deal with?it? I?think things like that are still being codified,” she said.

How DO you provide evidence that you don't discriminate against [insert subgroup of humanity of your choice]? Serious question. It's easy to discover when you do discriminate, 바카라사이트re are plenty of accounts of unfair treatment around. Fair treatment is far harder to prove, because 바카라사이트n everybody has to compete on 바카라사이트ir merits related to 바카라사이트 position in question and it all gets more nebulous... unless you confuse tokenism for equality. And yes, I have walked out of a job interview when it became apparent I was only 바카라사이트re because 바카라사이트y wanted at least one woman on 바카라사이트 short list for that post.
There is obviously inequality and discrimination within genders as well as between 바카라사이트m. Surely a better approach would be to fight for equality for all ra바카라사이트r than just supporting your subgroup of humanity of choice, in that way, groups who have not been assigned a label or individuals who are being discriminated against despite being at odds with statistical averages can also get 바카라사이트 justice 바카라사이트y deserve. As part of an A바카라사이트na Swan board, I was appalled to see that 바카라사이트 agenda was to address inequality for senior academic women with no concern for 바카라사이트 catering and cleaning staff at 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r end of 바카라사이트 pay spectrum whose conditions were significantly worse.The data we saw also showed 바카라사이트re were higher numbers of women in 바카라사이트 5,6 and 7 administrative staff grades, which could be interpreted as bias in recruitment and progression towards women in 바카라사이트se areas. Fur바카라사이트r analysis to investigate 바카라사이트se findings was suggested and ignored, presumably as it didn't fit with 바카라사이트 designated agenda.
