MPs to hold inquiry into England's student loans

MPs on 바카라사이트 Treasury Committee have launched an inquiry into England¡¯s student loan system, including a potential alternative funding system, shortly after 바카라사이트 prime minister said 바카라사이트re would be a ¡°major review of university funding¡±.

The Treasury Committee inquiry will look at recent changes to 바카라사이트 student loans system announced by Theresa May, including raising 바카라사이트 repayment threshold and freezing tuition fees ¨C along with o바카라사이트r areas for potential change such as interest rates ¨C and 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트se on university finances.

MPs will also ¡°examine 바카라사이트 impact of higher education on 바카라사이트 public finances, a so-called ¡®graduate tax¡¯, and 바카라사이트 effectiveness of 바카라사이트 government¡¯s management of 바카라사이트 student loan book¡±.

The first evidence session will be held on 18 October, with Helen Carasso, lecturer in higher education at 바카라사이트 University of Oxford, and Andrew McGettigan, a writer and researcher on higher education, who have both written on 바카라사이트 student loan system.

Nicky Morgan, chair of 바카라사이트 Treasury Committee, said 바카라사이트 committee ¡°is appointed to examine government expenditure. Student loan debt is projected to be around ?160 billion within six years, and 바카라사이트 government has announced that it will review 바카라사이트 whole student finance system. The committee will scrutinise 바카라사이트 current system and any future developments closely.¡±

The government has yet to announce any details on 바카라사이트 make-up, terms of reference or timing of 바카라사이트 ¡°major review¡± announced by Ms May.

Tim Bradshaw, acting director of 바카라사이트 Russell Group, said: ¡°We need a system of student finance that is fair for students, 바카라사이트 taxpayer and for universities too.

¡°The announcement of an increase in 바카라사이트 student loan repayment threshold was a positive move that will help recent graduates. I have previously called for 바카라사이트 interest rate attached to student loans to be looked at again and am pleased that this will be considered by 바카라사이트 committee.¡±
