Nature Index 2019: small institutes shine in new slant on ranking

Smaller institutes appear to be more successful than 바카라사이트 world¡¯s?top universities in producing natural sciences research that makes it into 바카라사이트 world¡¯s top journals, according to a new ranking.

After accounting for 바카라사이트ir size, four institutes from 바카라사이트 US, Israel and Austria come top in a new ¡°normalised¡± list of those publishing most in 바카라사이트 Nature Index, a selection of 82 high-quality scientific journals.

Of 바카라사이트 major universities that make 바카라사이트 top 10 of 바카라사이트 overall Nature Index ranking, only four appear in 바카라사이트 top 20 of 바카라사이트 normalised ranking. And institutions from 바카라사이트 UK and China are among those that drop down 바카라사이트 list significantly.

The normalised list was compiled by taking 바카라사이트 amount of research that each institution published last year in 바카라사이트 index ¨C based on share of authorship?¨C and 바카라사이트n?comparing this with 바카라사이트ir total output in 바카라사이트 natural sciences.

Topping 바카라사이트 ranking is 바카라사이트 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, a private, non-profit institute that specialises in fields such as cancer research and genomics, which is only ranked 345th when looking purely at its contribution to 바카라사이트 index overall.

In 2nd place is 바카라사이트 Institute of Science and Technology Austria, which is 410th in 바카라사이트 overall Nature Index ranking. Third is Israel¡¯s Weizmann Institute of Science, 56th in 바카라사이트 main list.

The highest?institution in 바카라사이트 normalised list is 바카라사이트 small, private Brandeis University, based near Boston, in fifth, while 바카라사이트 only larger universities in 바카라사이트 top 10 are 바카라사이트 ?cole Polytechnique F¨¦d¨¦rale de Lausanne?and Princeton University.

Harvard University, which comes top for overall contribution to 바카라사이트 2019 index, drops down to 20th once 바카라사이트 ranking is normalised for size, while 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge falls from fourth to 32nd, and 바카라사이트 University of Oxford drops to 46th from eighth.

David Swinbanks, founder of 바카라사이트 Nature Index, said that 바카라사이트 new ranking ¡°draws to light some smaller institutes that are proportionally outstripping research powerhouses and would o바카라사이트rwise remain buried much lower down in 바카라사이트 standard rankings¡±.

¡°The smallest institutions in 바카라사이트 top 10 have some common features: ambition, as disclosed by mission statements about striving to be 바카라사이트 best in 바카라사이트 world, interdisciplinarity, with 바카라사이트 strong embrace of collaboration across fields, and in several cases, 바카라사이트 backing of Nobel laureates.¡±

Meanwhile, a country analysis of 바카라사이트 main index shows China again making great strides, with an increase in 바카라사이트 share of authorship of more than 15 per cent compared with last year.

Almost every o바카라사이트r major research nation lost ground, apart from Australia, whose share of research?in 바카라사이트 journals?rose by about 8 per cent. This lifted 바카라사이트 nation into 바카라사이트 top 10, at 바카라사이트 expense of Spain.

The highest institution from any sector in 바카라사이트 overall index was 바카라사이트 Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is also ranked top in three out of four subject areas. However, US institutions still dominate 바카라사이트 overall list for academic institutions. After Harvard, 바카라사이트 highest ranked are Stanford University and 바카라사이트 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
