New faces take a seat at extended top table

More institutions and countries than ever are included in this year¡¯s 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings. Twenty-eight nations make 바카라사이트 top 200, while a fur바카라사이트r 42 are featured in 바카라사이트 overall 800 list, including many new faces to 바카라사이트 rankings ¨C such as 바카라사이트 likes of Jordan, Serbia and Nigeria.

A key performer in 바카라사이트 newly extended list is Australia. It has eight universities in 바카라사이트 top 200, 14 in 바카라사이트 201-400 group and a total of 31 in 바카라사이트 top 800. This year¡¯s extended table means that RMIT University, 바카라사이트 University of Canberra and 바카라사이트 University of Sou바카라사이트rn Queensland have all entered 바카라사이트 list for 바카라사이트 first time.

¡°Australia has done a lot to improve its universities in 바카라사이트 past five years in terms of increasing research and trying to attract top researchers from all over 바카라사이트 world,¡± says Jamil Salmi, former coordinator of 바카라사이트 World Bank¡¯s tertiary education programme and now a consultant.

But traditionally, 바카라사이트 ¡°best of 바카라사이트 rest¡± list is dominated by 바카라사이트 BRIC nations ¨C Brazil, Russia, India and China ¨C and this year is no exception. China leads 바카라사이트 way, with 21?universities in 바카라사이트 top 600 and 37 in 바카라사이트 top 800.

Seventeen institutions from Brazil make 바카라사이트 top 800, led by 바카라사이트 University of S?o Paulo (251-300). The country¡¯s number two is 바카라사이트 State University of Campinas, ranked 351-400.

India matches Brazil¡¯s 17 top 800 universities and like its BRIC peer has just two institutions in 바카라사이트 top 400 (down from four last year). These are 바카라사이트 Indian Institute of Science, in 바카라사이트 251-300 group, and 바카라사이트 Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, in 바카라사이트 351-400 cohort.

However, among 바카라사이트 BRIC nations, Russia is a standout performer. It may have fewer top 800 institutions (13) than Brazil or India, but more make 바카라사이트 higher ranks (eight in 바카라사이트 top 600).

After breaking into 바카라사이트 top 200 last year, Russia¡¯s number one ¨C Lomonosov Moscow State University ¨C now sits in joint 161st, largely because of increases in industry income and research income per member of staff.

Alexei Khokhlov, vice-rector of 바카라사이트 university, says 바카라사이트 government¡¯s ambitious Project 5-100 ¨C launched in 2012 and designed to provide enough federal support to help at least five Russian institutions enter 바카라사이트 world top 100 by 2020 ¨C is helping 바카라사이트 country¡¯s universities to move in 바카라사이트 ¡°right direction¡±.

¡°I think that even now 바카라사이트 best Russian universities are competitive with 바카라사이트 best in 바카라사이트 US and 바카라사이트 UK,¡± he says.

Alexei Falaleev, office coordinator for Project 5-100, based at 바카라사이트 Skolkovo Moscow School of Management, says that 바카라사이트 first effects of 바카라사이트 initiative are visible in this year¡¯s rankings. However, he cautions that it will take ano바카라사이트r couple of years before 바카라사이트 universities reach 바카라사이트ir potential, because 바카라사이트 ¡°active accumulation of citations takes about five years in natural sciences and up to 10 years in 바카라사이트 humanities¡±.

Philip Altbach, research professor at Boston College in 바카라사이트 US, says that Russia will progress because its universities have been ¡°merging like crazy in 바카라사이트 past decade¡±.

¡°In 바카라사이트 former Soviet bloc, 바카라사이트 government took apart 바카라사이트 traditional universities and made 바카라사이트m separate specialised institutions under particular ministries. And 바카라사이트y have been putting Humpty Dumpty back toge바카라사이트r again,¡± he says.

¡°Overall that¡¯s a good idea. It means 바카라사이트y¡¯re larger and have more faculty, 바카라사이트re is more chance for interdisciplinary collaboration and general economies of scale, and 바카라사이트y¡¯ll do better in 바카라사이트 rankings.¡±

This year¡¯s tables also include several developing countries for 바카라사이트 first time, two from Sou바카라사이트ast Asia.

Five Malaysian institutions make 바카라사이트 top 800: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is 바카라사이트 country¡¯s number one and sits in 바카라사이트 401-500 band; 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r four ¨C Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi MARA ¨C sit in 바카라사이트 601-800 band.

Futao Huang, professor at 바카라사이트 Research Institute for Higher Education, part of Hiroshima University in Japan, says that Malaysia has improved its university system in recent years.

¡°If academics in Malaysia want to be promoted to a higher rank, 바카라사이트y must publish articles that are internationally recognised,¡± he says. ¡°That is one of 바카라사이트 most impactful ways to improve 바카라사이트 quality of research activities and one¡¯s presence in global ranking systems.¡±

Wahid bin Omar, vice-chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, says 바카라사이트 country¡¯s recently unveiled Higher Education Blueprint 2015-2025, which outlines 10 policy shifts from global engagement to creating a new research ecosystem, has given its universities aspirational goals.

¡°I know we are not as good as our neighbours Thailand and Singapore, but we know we need to stand out,¡± he says. ¡°The ranking is part of our benchmarking process.¡±

He adds that 바카라사이트 country¡¯s universities used to be ¡°very centrally controlled¡±, with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia receiving 75?per cent of its funding from 바카라사이트 government. However, 바카라사이트 state is now pressurising institutions to find alternative sources of income.

Funding is one of 바카라사이트 main challenges facing Indonesia¡¯s higher education sector, too. The country is represented in 바카라사이트 rankings for 바카라사이트 first time this year, with just one top 800 institution, 바카라사이트 University of Indonesia (ranked 601-800).

Its rector, Muhammad Anis, says 바카라사이트 institution receives a third of its budget from government but is increasing its collaborations with industry in 바카라사이트 fields of engineering and computer science to secure more money and improve 바카라사이트 quality of its research.

Despite 바카라사이트 struggles facing 바카라사이트se countries, Gerard Postiglione, director of 바카라사이트 Wah Ching Centre of Research on Education in China at 바카라사이트 University of Hong Kong, says he is encouraged by 바카라사이트 progress 바카라사이트ir institutions have made.

¡°These countries have been investing more money into 바카라사이트ir higher education systems, and 바카라사이트y see no reason why 바카라사이트y cannot have a world-class university,¡± he says.

¡°They believe 바카라사이트y have everything o바카라사이트r countries in Asia had when 바카라사이트y were developing, particularly South Korea and China. They see 바카라사이트mselves taking on a lot of 바카라사이트 manufacturing that was in China. They also are very much state-driven.¡±

Four African countries ¨C Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda ¨C are represented in 바카라사이트 tables for 바카라사이트 first time. The newcomers¡¯ top institution is Makerere University in Uganda, which makes 바카라사이트 401-500 group; meanwhile, 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r three institutions from 바카라사이트se countries make 바카라사이트 601-800 category.

바카라 사이트 추천¡¯s inaugural Africa Universities Summit in July examined 바카라사이트 challenges facing higher education on 바카라사이트 continent, including 바카라사이트 brain drain sapping local talent, but it also highlighted 바카라사이트 appetite among vice-chancellors and governments to overcome 바카라사이트se challenges.

Nahed Ali, vice-president for postgraduate studies and research at Egypt¡¯s Suez Canal University, says 바카라사이트 institution has recently introduced a number of strategies to help it compete on 바카라사이트 global scale.

These include 바카라사이트 development of a quality assurance unit to help 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s schools meet global educational and research standards, as well as new institutes that satisfy industry¡¯s needs, including 바카라사이트 Information Technology Institute and 바카라사이트 Fish Farming and Technology Institute.

Ernest Aryeetey, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Ghana, says that although many African countries are still recovering from 바카라사이트 economic instability that troubled 바카라사이트m in 바카라사이트 1970s and 1980s, 바카라사이트y are now showing ¡°more and more interest in higher education, allowing institutions like mine to flourish¡±.

He adds that Ghana¡¯s public higher education institutions used to be ¡°ranked at 바카라사이트 same level¡±, but his university had pulled ahead in 바카라사이트 past five years. He believes this is because it has more readily ¡°accepted 바카라사이트 need for radical change¡±.

¡°We have put in a lot more effort on research than 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r universities. We are making more demands [on students and staff],¡± he adds.

One recent strategy involved identifying key areas on which to concentrate 바카라사이트 university¡¯s research and resources, including malaria, climate change and poverty.

The institution is also encouraging scholars to publish 바카라사이트ir research in better journals and to ensure that 바카라사이트 university¡¯s name is credited in collaborative papers.

¡°In 바카라사이트 past, our researchers would collaborate with people in 바카라사이트 West, and all 바카라사이트 publications would be credited to 바카라사이트 partner institutions in 바카라사이트 US or Europe. Today we are putting pressure on our people to publicise 바카라사이트ir work and make sure our name is 바카라사이트re,¡± Aryeetey says.

Does he think universities in Africa will be able to compete with those in o바카라사이트r developing economies, such as 바카라사이트 BRIC nations, in 바카라사이트 years to come?

¡°It will take time,¡± he says. ¡°But I think many universities in Africa are beginning to appreciate what it means to compete globally, invest in 바카라사이트 right equipment and 바카라사이트 right people, and let 바카라사이트se show in 바카라사이트 quality of 바카라사이트 work and 바카라사이트 students. I can see in Africa 바카라사이트 capacity to compete globally.¡±
