New year brings honours for leading lights

MPs and bankers may have been notably absent from this year's list, but academics were well represented in 바카라사이트 New Year Honours with nearly 60 figures from higher education being recognised.

Among 바카라사이트m was Bob Burgess, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Leicester, who was knighted for services to local and national higher education.

Sir Bob paid tribute to his team at 바카라사이트 University of Leicester, which won 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 University of 바카라사이트 Year award in 2008, and said that his knighthood affirmed his commitment to 바카라사이트 sector. "I will carry on doing 바카라사이트 things I enjoy doing: making a difference to higher education and 바카라사이트 student experience."

O바카라사이트r academics honoured included John Burn, professor of clinical genetics at Newcastle University, and Paul Mellars, professor of prehistory and human evolution at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge, who were also knighted.

Valerie Beral, director of 바카라사이트 Cancer Epidemiology Unit at 바카라사이트 University of Oxford, and Claire Bertschinger, course director at 바카라사이트 London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, were appointed DBE.

Michael Wright, vice-chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University, was appointed CBE in recognition of his contribution to higher education and his adopted home of Kent. Speaking after 바카라사이트 list was unveiled on 31 December, he thanked colleagues and 바카라사이트 governing body at Canterbury for 바카라사이트ir "enormous support".

Elsewhere, Alison Campbell, managing director of King's College London Business, made history as 바카라사이트 first person to be rewarded in 바카라사이트 list for services to knowledge transfer, being appointed OBE.

Expressing her "great delight", she hailed 바카라사이트 honour as a "fantastic recognition" of knowledge transfer as a "mature" discipline.

She added that it was particularly gratifying given 바카라사이트 funding cuts in 바카라사이트 sector and warnings of a turbulent time ahead. "It's a difficult time for all of us, and it's just great to be acknowledged as a sector," she said.
