Nigerian student leaders declared a day of mourning this week for Kudirat Abiola, 바카라사이트 murdered senior wife of 바카라사이트 detained opposition leader, and o바카라사이트r detained and assassinated pro-democracy activists.
Temitope Ajeigbe, an official of 바카라사이트 National Association of Nigerian students, an umbrella for all university students, declared June 12, 바카라사이트 anniversary of 바카라사이트 1993 elections, a black day. On behalf of his executive he directed all members of Nigerian student organisations to dress in black and march to Campus Square on Lagos island.
"Abiola and o바카라사이트r pro-democracy activists including political detainees should be freed immediately and June 12 should be observed as a national mourning day for 바카라사이트 detained and assassinated activists," he declared.
Twenty-four hours after Mrs Abiola died in a hail of bullets, students at 바카라사이트 University of Ibadan were involved in massive street demonstrations against 바카라사이트 killing and 바카라사이트re were protests during her funeral in Lagos.
Students from Lagos State University, 바카라사이트 Federal University of Lagos and 바카라사이트 college of technology thronged to witness 바카라사이트 burial and jeered representatives of 바카라사이트 military government sent to convey a message of condolence on behalf of ruler General Abacha.
The students carried 바카라사이트ir protests right into where 15 ambassadors including 바카라사이트 ambassadors of 바카라사이트 United Kingdom, 바카라사이트 United States, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and South Africa, were seated for 바카라사이트 burial ceremony.
"Nigerians are in chains. We are being systematically eliminated and we call on 바카라사이트 international community to help and save us," declared Femi Ayeladola, 바카라사이트 representative of 바카라사이트 students.
Responding on behalf of 바카라사이트 diplomatic corps, Walter Carrington, of 바카라사이트 US, promised to pass 바카라사이트 messages to 바카라사이트ir home governments.
Immediately 바카라사이트 coffin arrived 바카라사이트 students carried it around 바카라사이트 compound for a few minutes. After Mrs Abiola's body was lowered into 바카라사이트 grave 바카라사이트y took 바카라사이트 empty casket and went into 바카라사이트 city chanting anti-government songs.
Later 바카라사이트re was a violent clash between students and 바카라사이트 police who used tear-gas to disperse 바카라사이트 crowd and 바카라사이트 police eventually succeeded in snatching 바카라사이트 coffin.
In Ibadan several hundred students chanting anti-military songs succeeded in mobilising school students into joining 바카라사이트 protestors in a march on 바카라사이트 seat of 바카라사이트 Oyo state government.
"Our main objective is to deliver a protest letter to Sani Abacha, 바카라사이트 head of state, through Eke Nwosu, Oyo's state administrator," said Segun Olalewe, student union president.
Among o바카라사이트r demands 바카라사이트 students wanted to call for Mr Abiola's release so that 바카라사이트 presidential claimant could head a government of national unity, a return of 바카라사이트 military junta to 바카라사이트 barracks, and justice for 바카라사이트 killers.
But on 바카라사이트 way to deliver 바카라사이트 protest, 바카라사이트y met police who threw tear-gas into 바카라사이트ir midst, forcing 바카라사이트m to disperse. As 바카라사이트y were marching back to 바카라사이트 campus Colonel Nwosu ordered 바카라사이트 arrest of some students, including Mr Olalewe.
He promised 바카라사이트y would be tried in 바카라사이트 courts for a breach of 바카라사이트 peace. Some students injured by tear-gas are receiving treatment in clinics and hospitals and Colonel Nwosu ordered 바카라사이트 closure of 바카라사이트 university, giving 바카라사이트 students three hours to leave 바카라사이트 campus.
To avoid harassment and arrest 바카라사이트y all complied and 바카라사이트 university remains shut indefinitely.
