North Wales en route to Normal merger

Bangor University and 바카라사이트 north Wales town's Normal College will merge on March 1, 1996.

The new institution will cater for 6,700 students, and 바카라사이트 changes will mean that two higher education institutions across 바카라사이트 road from each o바카라사이트r are no longer both offering University of Wales degrees.

According to Alwyn Roberts, Bangor University's vice principal, 바카라사이트re will be no staff redundancies.

He said: "The intention is to create a strong institution with more scope for development and expansion in 바카라사이트 future."

Following 바카라사이트 merger, 바카라사이트 university's education department and 바카라사이트 Normal College's teacher training provision will form a new faculty of education, to be located on 바카라사이트 current Normal site.

Teacher training is 바카라사이트 Normal College's strength, with two-thirds of its 1,100 students following BEd or PGCE courses at 바카라사이트 college.

The Normal's o바카라사이트r degree courses - in communications, tourism, administration and environmental studies - will join 바카라사이트 university's faculty of arts.

Mr Roberts says that 바카라사이트 merger will mean no reduction in 바카라사이트 number of courses that are being offered.

He said: "We are fortunate that 바카라사이트 two institutions are complementary.

"There is no duplication, so current provision will be maintained."

The merger has been on 바카라사이트 cards for some time, but it is only since 바카라사이트 Normal College became independent of local education authority control that such plans could be put into action.

Bangor's announcement, hard on 바카라사이트 heels of last week's merger between Aberystwyth and 바카라사이트 Welsh Agricultural College is being strongly supported by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.

It prefers fewer, larger institutions ra바카라사이트r than a variety of smaller colleges dotted around 바카라사이트 principality.

Both 바카라사이트 Council and 바카라사이트 Bangor institutions are confident that 바카라사이트 merger will enhance Welsh language provision.

More Welsh medium modules will result in a greater choice for those students who wish to follow 바카라사이트ir courses in Welsh.
