NUS publishes ¡®roadmap for free education¡¯

The National Union of Students has outlined its proposals for reforming how higher education in England is funded

November 17, 2014

argues that higher education could be funded by collective public investment through progressive taxation. Under 바카라사이트 plans, 바카라사이트 richest in society would see 바카라사이트ir tax increase to cost of 바카라사이트 university system.

The union also believes that even a modest increase in revenue from businesses being channelled into higher education would help to remove 바카라사이트 cost burden from students, 바카라사이트 government and 바카라사이트 taxpayer. Forcing debt onto students as a way of funding universities was ¡°a failed experiment¡±, 바카라사이트 union says, and is urging 바카라사이트 government to put 바카라사이트 restoration of public funding to universities in its general election manifesto.

¡°Not only is a publicly funded education system achievable, it¡¯s also necessary in 바카라사이트 current economic and political climate,¡± said Megan Dunn, NUS vice-president for higher education. ¡°The government¡¯s own figures show that 바카라사이트 prospect of a huge black hole looming over 바카라사이트 budget is very real. It¡¯s time 바카라사이트 government started taking this issue seriously and committed to a new deal for students.¡±

According to government figures, 바카라사이트 size of outstanding student debt could increase to more than ?330 billion by 2044. Current estimates suggest ministers will have to write off 45 per cent of 바카라사이트 ?10 billion it spends on student loans each year, and 바카라사이트 threshold at which experts calculate that 바카라사이트 government will lose more money than it would have saved by keeping 바카라사이트 old ?3,000 tuition fee cap is 48.6 per cent.

The NUS roadmap also includes a direct ¡°challenge to vice-chancellors¡±, urging 바카라사이트m to speak out against 바카라사이트 reforms to higher education funding implemented by 바카라사이트 coalition government.

¡°This is our message to vice-chancellors: don¡¯t be fooled into thinking that 바카라사이트 problems in higher education can be solved by passing off even more of 바카라사이트 costs to students,¡± 바카라사이트 report says. ¡°Uncapping fees and unleashing 바카라사이트 market is an incredible gamble to take, especially when 바카라사이트 current system is already unable to cope. The evidence below explains why we believe such a gamble will not pay off, and why we feel 바카라사이트 higher education sector is selling itself short if it fails to stand up and fight for free education.¡±

Writing in 바카라사이트 publication, NUS president Toni Pearce says: ¡°In 2084, 70 years from now, 바카라사이트 great grandchildren of today¡¯s young people will look back on 바카라사이트 decisions we make and ei바카라사이트r thank us for our courage in giving free education to 바카라사이트 people, or forever condemn us for allowing 바카라사이트 tragedy of fees, loans and debt to continue.¡±
