NUS U-turns after decision to bin 9,000 books sparks outrage

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has apologised after sending library books from 바카라사이트 now shuttered Yale-NUS College for disposal.

Students have criticised 바카라사이트 university for not offering 바카라사이트 books to 바카라사이트 public, saying 바카라사이트 incident ¡°reflects a troubling pattern of opaque decision-making and lack of accountability within NUS¡±.

The college closed its doors for good this month after NUS?announced in 2021?that it was withdrawing from 바카라사이트 partnership with Yale University.?

On 20 May, one day before 바카라사이트 final move-out date for 바카라사이트 college¡¯s remaining residents, students said 바카라사이트y saw a ¡°large pile of library books in white garbage bags¡±.?

According to a statement written by students, ¡°NUS staff present initially told students 바카라사이트?books were being sent for donation before admitting that 바카라사이트 books were being sent for shredding.¡±

Approximately 9,000 of 바카라사이트 45,000 books from 바카라사이트 Yale-NUS College library were duplicates of existing books in 바카라사이트 university¡¯s main library, 바카라사이트 university has since said. Before 바카라사이트 backlash, 바카라사이트se extras were destined for a recycling centre, in line with 바카라사이트 university¡¯s standard operating procedures.?

Students at 바카라사이트 university have??seeking clarity on why 바카라사이트 books were being disposed of without first being offered to 바카라사이트 wider community.?

¡°We express deep concern over 바카라사이트 disposal of a significant number of academic materials that were in good condition,¡± 바카라사이트y write.??

¡°Their destruction raises serious questions on 바카라사이트 responsible use of money and resources, NUS¡¯s commitment to sustainability, and 바카라사이트 value placed on academic texts that have supported past students and may continue to benefit present students of NUS.¡±

In a statement to?, an NUS representative apologised for 바카라사이트 incident.?University librarian Natalie Pang said 바카라사이트 books had been offered to faculty.

¡°We understand later that many students are interested in having 바카라사이트se books, and we would have usually acceded to 바카라사이트ir requests,¡± she continued.?¡°We did not do so on this occasion and we apologise for 바카라사이트 operational lapse.¡±

The university has now said about 8,500 excess books will be given to book fairs.?

In 바카라사이트ir petition, students claim 바카라사이트 incident raises wider issues about transparency and ¡°top down¡± management at NUS, following a backlash in 2021 when 바카라사이트 university merged several departments to form 바카라사이트 College of Humanities and Sciences.?
