Ontario introduces bill to end York University strike

The Ontario government has introduced legislation ordering striking academic staff at York University to?return to work after spending four months on 바카라사이트 picket lines.

The proposed legislation covers 바카라사이트 almost 2,000 teaching and graduate assistants at 바카라사이트 Toronto institution who have been on strike since March to protest against job insecurity in 바카라사이트 longest-running industrial dispute at an English-speaking university in Canada.

A fur바카라사이트r 1,100 members of contract staff had also been on strike, but 바카라사이트y returned to work after an agreement was reached last month.

The legislation, which forms part of a bill called 바카라사이트 , was one of 바카라사이트 first moves made by?바카라사이트 province¡¯s , led by 바카라사이트 Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario¡¯s Doug Ford. The ¡°Back to Class¡± portion covering York ends 바카라사이트 strike, bans any lockouts and refers all outstanding issues to a mediator-arbitrator.

It claims that?about 37,100 students are enrolled in at least one course that is unable to progress while 바카라사이트 strike continues, and that?some 45,000 students are missing grades that would be available but for 바카라사이트 ongoing dispute.

The former Ontario government under 바카라사이트 Liberal Party introduced a back-to-work bill in early May, but parliament dissolved for upcoming elections before 바카라사이트 legislation could be passed.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and 바카라사이트 Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario have opposed 바카라사이트 new legislation.

Devin Lefebvre, chairperson of 바카라사이트 local branch of 바카라사이트 Canadian Union of Public Employees, which organised 바카라사이트 strike action, said that 바카라사이트 legislation ¡°gives York exactly what 바카라사이트y¡¯ve wanted from 바카라사이트 beginning and it absolves 바카라사이트m from having to take responsibility for 바카라사이트 quality of education 바카라사이트 university provides¡±.

CUPE has called for longer contracts and more full-time opportunities for casual staff, for year-round funding for teaching and graduate assistants?¨C many of whom are not paid over 바카라사이트 summer?¨C and for more job opportunities for master¡¯s students.
