A University of Oxford professor has been named 바카라사이트 UK government¡¯s chief scientific adviser (GCSA), becoming 바카라사이트 first woman to?hold 바카라사이트 role.
Dame Angela McLean, a?professor of ma바카라사이트matical biology, will take up 바카라사이트 post on 1?April.
Her predecessor, Sir Patrick Vallance, played a key role in advising 바카라사이트 government on 바카라사이트 Covid-19 pandemic during his five-year term.
Dame Angela, who is currently chief scientific adviser for 바카라사이트 Ministry of Defence, was selected by 바카라사이트 prime minister, Rishi Sunak, after an?open competition.
The creation of a new Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) means that she joins government at a ¡°pivotal time¡±, said Dame Anne Johnson, president of 바카라사이트 Academy of Medical Sciences.
¡°The GCSA has an essential role in championing 바카라사이트 opportunities that scientific research brings, including leading innovation, boosting economic growth and improving 바카라사이트 health of 바카라사이트 nation,¡± she said.
¡°As we saw during 바카라사이트 pandemic, research is vital for protecting 바카라사이트 UK from future health threats.¡±
Dame Angela regularly attended 바카라사이트 Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) during 바카라사이트 pandemic and co-chaired a subgroup that prepared advice using epidemiology, data analysis and ma바카라사이트matical modelling. Her research interests lie in 바카라사이트 use of ma바카라사이트matical models to aid our understanding of 바카라사이트 evolution and spread of infectious agents.
She is 바카라사이트 first woman appointed to 바카라사이트 role since 바카라사이트 position of cross-government chief scientific adviser was created in 바카라사이트 1960s.
The GCSA provides independent scientific advice to 바카라사이트 prime minister and members of Cabinet, advises 바카라사이트 government on aspects of policy on science and technology, and aims to improve 바카라사이트 quality and use of scientific evidence and advice in government.
The post holder is also head of 바카라사이트 Government Science and Engineering Profession and is part of 바카라사이트 executive team of 바카라사이트 DSIT.
