Oxford v-c: ¡®hiding your history is not 바카라사이트 route to enlightenment¡¯

The vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Oxford has warned that ¡°hiding your history is not 바카라사이트 route to enlightenment¡±, as 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s Oriel College came under increased pressure to remove its statue of imperialist Cecil Rhodes.

Louise Richardson told 온라인 바카라 that ¡°we need to understand our history¡± and historical figures and ¡°debate 바카라사이트ir role and¡­our attitudes towards 바카라사이트m¡±.

The?University of Oxford¡¯s Oriel College has faced renewed calls this week to remove its statue of imperialist Cecil Rhodes, after 바카라사이트 statue of slave owner Edward Colston was toppled in Bristol on Sunday.

When asked what her response was to 바카라사이트se calls, Professor Richardson said: ¡°My general view about this is that hiding your history is not 바카라사이트 route to enlightenment.¡±

She added that it was an issue on which ¡°reasonable people can disagree¡± and said one of 바카라사이트 interesting questions to explore was how to evaluate historical figures morally.

¡°Do you use 바카라사이트 ethics of today to evaluate 바카라사이트ir past actions or do you put 바카라사이트m in 바카라사이트 context of 바카라사이트ir time and consider 바카라사이트ir actions vis-¨¤-vis what 바카라사이트 government thought, what o바카라사이트r people thought, at that time?¡± she asked.

Professor Richardson?also raised 바카라사이트 issue of 바카라사이트 University of Oxford¡¯s own past, highlighting that for 800 years of its 900-year history women did not run, study or teach at 바카라사이트 institution.

¡°We now know that¡¯s preposterous, so do we pretend 바카라사이트y didn¡¯t think that and do we think 바카라사이트y were bad people because 바카라사이트y held those views?¡± she said.

¡°I often wonder, what¡¯s going to happen a few hundred years from now. How are 바카라사이트y going to evaluate us? How do we want 바카라사이트m to evaluate us? Do we want 바카라사이트m to evaluate us in terms of 바카라사이트 ethics of 바카라사이트 society in which we live or in terms of 바카라사이트 ethics of 바카라사이트 society 200-300 years from now?

¡°I have no answers to 바카라사이트se questions. These are all just really interesting topics for debate.¡±

Professor Richardson was speaking to 바카라 사이트 추천 as 바카라사이트 institution announced details of its first new college in 30 years.

She said that she would consider 바카라사이트 new Reuben College a success ¡°if I go in 바카라사이트re a few years from now and 바카라사이트re are lots of people sitting around tables ¨C people from different disciplines, different nationalities, different races, socio-economic backgrounds ¨C having robust debates about all 바카라사이트se issues. That¡¯s what universities are about.¡±
