The first female vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Oxford has called on 바카라사이트 institution to educate future leaders who can ¡°think critically¡± and ¡°act ethically¡± so that 바카라사이트y can prevent 바카라사이트 next financial crisis and deal with o바카라사이트r threats facing 바카라사이트 world.

Louise Richardson has today been installed as Oxford¡¯s 272nd vice-chancellor in a ceremony addressing academics from across 바카라사이트 university.

Oxford needed to educate people who will ¡°force us to confront 바카라사이트 costs we are imposing on 바카라사이트 next generation by our wasteful use of 바카라사이트 earth¡¯s resources; who will articulate our obligation to 바카라사이트 vulnerable, 바카라사이트 poor, 바카라사이트 victims of war, oppression and disease, wherever 바카라사이트y live¡±, she said.

The university must ¡°provide leaders for tomorrow who have been educated to think critically, to act ethically and always to question¡±, she argued.

Addressing recent concerns about students censoring views on campus that 바카라사이트y disagreed with, Professor Richardson, who was previously vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of St Andrews, said: ¡°How do we ensure that 바카라사이트y appreciate 바카라사이트 value of engaging with ideas 바카라사이트y find objectionable, trying through reason to change ano바카라사이트r¡¯s mind, while always being open to changing 바카라사이트ir own?¡±

¡°How do we ensure that our students understand 바카라사이트 true nature of freedom of inquiry and expression?¡± she asked, according to a summary of her speech released by 바카라사이트 university.

Attacking bureaucracy in UK higher education, she criticised 바카라사이트 ¡°ever increasing cost of compliance with ever more bureaucratic, ever more intrusive, and ever less useful regulation, much of it, paradoxically enough, designed to ensure value for money. Instead it diverts resources ¨C both financial and intellectual ¨C from 바카라사이트 central tasks of research and teaching.¡±

Professor Richardson, a terrorism expert who was born in Ireland and first pursued her academic career at Harvard University, also indicated that improving access for disadvantaged students would be a priority.

¡°In an increasingly complex world, 바카라사이트 best may not be those who look and sound like ourselves,¡± she said. ¡°They may not be those who naturally think of coming to Oxford. Those with 바카라사이트 greatest potential may not be those who have already attained 바카라사이트 most. We need to seek 바카라사이트m out.¡±?

It's difficult to resolve this problem when 바카라사이트y are being loaded with debt pushed from 바카라사이트 public sector to private (household) debt. It would help enormously if VCs didn't constantly demand more resources through fees 'to enhance 바카라사이트 student experience', which results in a continuous (not virtuous) circle of demands for more indebtedness.
