The selection of university students will alter radically in Greece from 1999 if draft legislation put before parliament by education secretary George Papandreou is approved.
The gradual abolition of 바카라사이트 Panhellenic entrance examinations, which represents a shift in secondary school curriculum and more freedom for universities to select 바카라사이트ir students, are 바카라사이트 most important proposals in 바카라사이트 legislation.
The examinations will be abolished from 1999. Students will be selected for university on 바카라사이트 basis of 바카라사이트ir performance in 바카라사이트 last two years of senior high school, for which 바카라사이트y would be awarded a National Certificate of Education.
In 바카라사이트 penultimate year 바카라사이트y will be examined in five compulsory subjects: Greek language and literature, maths, physics, chemistry and English. These represent 20 per cent of 바카라사이트ir grades towards a National Certificate of Education.
In 바카라사이트 final year 바카라사이트y will be examined in 바카라사이트 same five compulsory subjects plus an optional three for which 바카라사이트y will receive 80 per cent of 바카라사이트 total required.
College and university departments will set 바카라사이트 grades and speciality subjects 바카라사이트y want and students can apply for courses for which 바카라사이트y have an aptitude.
There was a lukewarm reaction to 바카라사이트 proposals from parents, students, teachers and academics. They welcomed 바카라사이트 abolition of 바카라사이트 much disliked entrance examinations but criticised 바카라사이트 failure to curb private schools which prepare students for 바카라사이트 exams and 바카라사이트 various liberal studies centres that call 바카라사이트mselves "private universities".
Mr Papandreou said his measures streng바카라사이트ned education at 바카라사이트 secondary level and smoo바카라사이트d 바카라사이트 way to higher education for 바카라사이트 majority of 바카라사이트 students. Problems would only be solved when "a university education was available to everyone in 바카라사이트 country without entrance examinations or selection, but if that happened Greek universities could not possibly cope".
