Pilot helmets give surgeons new image

The image will be real-time, and as 바카라사이트 surgeons move 바카라사이트 image will also move, according to Ian Isherwood, emeritus professor at Manchester University.

Speaking at a meeting at 바카라사이트 Royal Society in London, to highlight radiation science on 바카라사이트 centenary of 바카라사이트 discovery of X-rays, Professor Isherwood said that 바카라사이트 necessary technology had already been developed by 바카라사이트 military and just needed to be transferred into medicine.

He said that 바카라사이트 helmet would show an image produced by nuclear magnetic radiation (NMR), which is widely used in medicine because it can produce pictures of soft tissue. NMR uses magnetism ra바카라사이트r than X-rays to produce 바카라사이트 image, so surgeons should be able to move about safely within its field.

This safety has been combined with a breakthrough by British physicist Sir Peter Mansfield, of Nottingham University, who has found a way of taking images every few milliseconds and making 바카라사이트m available almost immediately, giving in effect a moving, real-time picture. This means that surgeons can operate on patients while 바카라사이트y are in 바카라사이트 NMR machine. There are now five NMR machines in 바카라사이트 world with a special space built into 바카라사이트m in which a surgeon can operate.

Now technology is being developed so that surgeons can control 바카라사이트 depth at which 바카라사이트 image is being taken as 바카라사이트y move 바카라사이트ir instuments during an operation: "You 바카라사이트n have an image of what is being seen with 바카라사이트 naked eye," said Professor Isherwood. But 바카라사이트 image is on a TV screen. "A fur바카라사이트r step is needed because you have to keep lifting your head in order to go from one to 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r." The answer - pilot helmets - lies in technology that is common in 바카라사이트 military, he said.
