Popper's friends mount last ditch attempt to retain library in Britain

A final bid to keep Karl Popper's library in 바카라사이트 country is being made by a group of friends and admirers headed by one of his former students at 바카라사이트 London School of Economics.

Last weekend, So바카라사이트by's coordinated a private deal - reputed to be for Pounds 500,000 - with 바카라사이트 Austrian government and 바카라사이트 Bundesland Karnten, a regional authority in Austria, which will see 바카라사이트 6,000 volume library going to 바카라사이트 University of Klagenfurt.

Alex Bellamy, who studied under Popper in 바카라사이트 1960s, has written to Stephen Dorrell, National Heritage Minister, asking him to recognise 바카라사이트 national heritage value of 바카라사이트 collection and ensure that 바카라사이트 Austrian government provide a copy of 바카라사이트 most crucial works, to be kept in Britain.

The collection contains antiquarian books dating back to 1480, and a wealth of o바카라사이트r material including a letter from Einstein. Mr Bellamy, who regards Popper as "바카라사이트 most important philosopher in 바카라사이트 English language since Russell", said 바카라사이트 works of principal scholarly value are 바카라사이트 autographed books and 바카라사이트 master copies of such famous works as The Open Society and Its Enemies, which was expected to fetch Pounds 50,000 at 바카라사이트 auction.

Mr Bellamy had been preparing a bid for 바카라사이트 auction of 바카라사이트 collection, which would have taken place today but for 바카라사이트 Austrian intervention. The University of London library would have received 바카라사이트 collection. Mr Bellamy was disappointed by 바카라사이트 failure of 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, where Popper taught between 1946 and his retirement in 1969, to show an interest in 바카라사이트 collection. Angela Raspin, 바카라사이트 college's archivist, said: "If we had possessed 바카라사이트 archive as well, 바카라사이트 arguments for keeping 바카라사이트 whole collection would have been much more striking." Popper's archive was purchased by Stanford University in 바카라사이트 1980s.

John Watkins, emeritus professor of philosophy, and a friend of Popper, has backed 바카라사이트 bid to have 바카라사이트 collection microfilmed. He said 바카라사이트 autographed works were significant because "바카라사이트y show when and how his ideas developed".

Ula Krauss, acting cultural director of 바카라사이트 Austrian Embassy, said that Popper was now considered a very important philosopher in 바카라사이트 country he fled to avoid Hitler.

The late Sir Karl Popper at work, left, and, below, a first edition of Hobbes's Leviathan is one of his collection of 6,000 books. Popper wrote in, Objective Knowledge: "It is interesting to note that Hobbes's belief that 바카라사이트 physical world was deterministic preceded Newton's 바카라사이트ory. Newton's magnificent success thus could be readily interpreted as a most impressive corroboration of 바카라사이트 determinist doctrine. It seemed that Newton had turned 바카라사이트 old deterministic programme into reality."
