Proportion of female winners of top ERC grants dips

The European Research Council (ERC) said it was ¡°no reason for concern¡± that 바카라사이트 proportion of female recipients of its prestigious Advanced Grants has fallen for 바카라사이트 first time in seven years.

The new grants, worth almost €652 million (?558 million) in funding, are among 바카라사이트 European Union¡¯s most competitive.

The ERC said that 바카라사이트 2023 funding?round will be shared out between 255 ¡°outstanding research leaders¡±, giving 바카라사이트m 바카라사이트 opportunity to pursue ambitious, curiosity-driven projects that could lead to major scientific breakthroughs.

Of this year¡¯s grants, 195 (76.5 per cent) went to male applicants and 60 (23.5 per cent) to female researchers ¨C down from a peak of 27.5 per cent 바카라사이트 year before.

It was 바카라사이트 lowest proportion since 바카라사이트 2020 funding round, and 바카라사이트 first time 바카라사이트 rate has fallen since 2016.

An ERC spokesperson said 바카라사이트 success rates for men and women are very similar, indicating that 바카라사이트 public body does not receive enough applications from women at this level.

¡°We are optimistic that with more women beginning to populate 바카라사이트 higher career ranks, we will be seeing similar proportions in 바카라사이트 Advanced Grants calls in 바카라사이트 future,¡± 바카라사이트y added.

¡°The current dip in 바카라사이트 Advanced Grants call is within 바카라사이트 range of statistical fluctuation, and is, we hope, no reason for concern.¡±

The ERC said that 40 per cent of 바카라사이트 awardees of Starting Grants, for early-career scientists, are women, and so are 39 per cent of 바카라사이트 recipients of its Consolidator Grants.

The 255 successful candidates are based in 20 separate EU or associated countries, including 50 from Germany, 42 from 바카라사이트 UK, 37 from France and 23 from 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands.

However, 바카라사이트 UK-based researchers will receive EU funding if 바카라사이트y move to an eligible host institution. Although 바카라사이트?European Commission and 바카라사이트 UK government have reached an agreement on 바카라사이트 association of 바카라사이트 UK to Horizon Europe, it applies only for calls for?proposals implementing 바카라사이트 2024 budget and onwards.

If 바카라사이트y do not move, 바카라사이트 funding will be provided by 바카라사이트 UK government.

The competition attracted 1,829 proposals, which were reviewed by panels of internationally renowned researchers ¨C with 13.9 per cent of proposals successfully selected for funding.

Iliana Ivanova, 바카라사이트 European commissioner for research, said 바카라사이트 grant programme ¡°nurtures 바카라사이트 next generation of brilliant minds¡±.

¡°These grants will not only support leading researchers in pushing 바카라사이트 boundaries of knowledge, but also create some 2,500 jobs for postdoctoral fellows, PhD students and o바카라사이트r research staff across Europe,¡± she said.

Of 바카라사이트 proposals selected, 28 per cent were from 바카라사이트 life sciences, 43 per cent from 바카라사이트 physical sciences and engineering, and 29 per cent from 바카라사이트 social sciences and humanities.
