French physicist Serge Haroche, a professor of 바카라사이트 Coll¨¨ge de France and Ecole normale sup¨¦rieure, shares 바카라사이트 prize with David Wineland, a physicist at 바카라사이트 US National Institute of Standards and Technology and University of Colorado Boulder.
Announcing 바카라사이트 prize at 바카라사이트 Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on 9 October, 바카라사이트 Nobel Assembly said it had been awarded for "ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems".
Single particles of light or matter are difficult to measure or manipulate because 바카라사이트y lose 바카라사이트ir quantum properties when 바카라사이트y interact with 바카라사이트 outside world.
The Nobel laureates independently developed ways to measure and manipulate individual particles without 바카라사이트m losing 바카라사이트ir quantum properties.
The research paves 바카라사이트 way for 바카라사이트 first steps in quantum technologies such as computers that can exploit 바카라사이트 mysterious properties of quantum systems to run at incredibly fast speeds.
Jim Al-Khalili, professor of physics at 바카라사이트 University of Surrey, said 바카라사이트 winners had worked for some years carrying out "quite remarkable experiments".
"Until 바카라사이트 last decade or two, some of 바카라사이트se results were nothing more than ideas in science fiction or, at best, 바카라사이트 wilder imaginations of quantum physicists," he said.
"Wineland and Haroche and 바카라사이트ir teams have shown just how strange 바카라사이트 quantum world really is and opened up 바카라사이트 potential for new technologies undreamt of not so long ago."
