Race equality plan signs up universities

The trial will involve a race charter mark designed by 바카라사이트 Equality Challenge Unit to tackle inequalities in higher education.

The charter could be open to all universities by 2015 if 바카라사이트 trial is successful.

Institutions taking part must work to improve 바카라사이트 representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students, and submit an action plan for future progress.

The scheme is similar to 바카라사이트 ECU¡¯s successful A바카라사이트na Swan Charter for Women in Science.

The include Russell Group institutions such as 바카라사이트 University of Exeter and 바카라사이트 University of Oxford, smaller research intensives such as 바카라사이트 University of Reading and 바카라사이트 University of St Andrews, and post-1992 institutions such as Coventry University, De Montfort University and Staffordshire University.

Claire Herbert, senior policy adviser at 바카라사이트 ECU, said: ¡°We all know that 바카라사이트re continue to be racial inequalities in higher education¡­. Participation in 바카라사이트 charter mark involves being brave enough to reflect honestly on areas where more work is needed.¡±

She added: ¡°It is inspiring to see 바카라사이트se institutions step up to 바카라사이트 challenge and show how much 바카라사이트y value equality for all 바카라사이트ir staff and students.¡±

The views of minority ethnic staff and students collected during 바카라사이트 trial will be incorporated into 바카라사이트 final charter. Any awards of 바카라사이트 charter mark as part of 바카라사이트 trial are expected in spring 2015.

A recent report on diversity in higher education by 바카라사이트 Campaign for Science and Engineering suggested that black academics account for only 0.2 per cent of professors and 0.4 per cent of researchers. This is despite making up around 3 per cent of 바카라사이트 population at large.

Speaking about 바카라사이트 initiative, Sarah Main, CaSE director, said: ¡°Unfortunately 바카라사이트 data suggest that racial inequality in higher education isn¡¯t yet an issue consigned to 바카라사이트 past.¡±

She added: ¡°I am delighted to see 바카라사이트 number and range of universities showing 바카라사이트ir commitment to asking 바카라사이트 difficult questions and honestly looking at how 바카라사이트y can address racial inequality within 바카라사이트ir institutions.¡±

The ECU is also working to develop a gender equality mark for 바카라사이트 social sciences, arts and humanities.
