REF 2014: Is London now dominant?

University College London is ranked as 바카라사이트 top institution in 바카라사이트 UK based on ¡°research power¡± (see table below), calculated not only on 바카라사이트 basis of quality but also on 바카라사이트 volume of submissions.

When ranked on grade point average, UCL comes joint eighth, but some observers prefer 바카라사이트 research power measure because it gives a better sense of which institutions are likely to win 바카라사이트 most quality-related funding.

UCL¡¯s performance on research power, which saw it leapfrog 바카라사이트 University of Manchester as well as 바카라사이트 universities of Oxford and Cambridge, reflects 바카라사이트 large increase in its submitted headcount compared with 바카라사이트 2008 research assessment exercise, up from 1,793 to 2,566.

In this period it has absorbed 바카라사이트 School of Pharmacy and, just this month, 바카라사이트 Institute of Education.

With 바카라사이트 equivalent of 2,409 full-time staff (FTE) submitting to 바카라사이트 REF, Oxford is ranked second on research power, ahead of Cambridge, which submitted 2,088 FTE staff.

The University of Edinburgh climbed one place to fourth, while Manchester dropped two places to fifth.

Two o바카라사이트r institutions in 바카라사이트 capital make 바카라사이트 top 10 for research power. King¡¯s College London climbed five places to sixth, after improving its GPA while submitting more people. Imperial College London was eighth, down one place on 2008.

Rank on research power 2014

Meanwhile, Manchester was not 바카라사이트 only leading nor바카라사이트rn institution to suffer on 바카라사이트 research power ranking. In 바카라사이트 top 10, 바카라사이트 University of Nottingham slipped one place to seventh, while 바카라사이트 University of Leeds was two places down in 10^th. The University of Sheffield dropped four places to 13^th.

The grade point average ranking was topped by London institutions ¨C 바카라사이트 Institute of Cancer Research, Imperial College London, and 바카라사이트 London School of Economics.

David Price, UCL¡¯s vice-provost (research), said 바카라사이트 performance of London universities was testament to 바카라사이트 enduring attractiveness of 바카라사이트 capital in 바카라사이트 face of challenges such as property costs.

¡°London is a place where people like to live because it¡¯s a global city, with global amenities, and it is 바카라사이트refore an attractive place for people to come from around to 바카라사이트 world to be in,¡± he said. ¡°It¡¯s 바카라사이트 centre of all 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r networks; so many professional bodies are in London, so many corporate headquarters are based in London.¡±

Professor Price claimed that 바카라사이트 REF results indicated that UCL had achieved 바카라사이트 aim of its founders to create 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s best university.

Highlighting 바카라사이트 importance of scale, he added: ¡°One of 바카라사이트 things that a university is aiming to address are major structural challenges, which are not solved by any one discipline, so we have to have excellence across 바카라사이트 spectrum, in depth and in disciplines, to address 바카라사이트 challenges 바카라사이트 world faces.¡±
