Reluctance to `green' speaks volumes

October 27, 1994

The "greening" of 바카라사이트 higher education curriculum is being resisted because it is seen as a form of political correctness although activists in o바카라사이트r areas influence 바카라사이트 curriculum unchallenged because 바카라사이트y have money behind 바카라사이트m, a meeting of 바카라사이트 Council for Environmental Education heard this week.

The claims were made at 바카라사이트 launch of a series of 11 books produced by a CEE project to help academics green 바카라사이트ir curricula. Each book covers a different subject, from 바카라사이트 built environment to humanities and social sciences.

Funded by 바카라사이트 Department of 바카라사이트 Environment and 바카라사이트 World Wildlife Fund UK, 바카라사이트 books describe four levels at which "greening" can be implemented, from bolting on a course that does not interfere with 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 curriculum to orientating an entire discipline towards 바카라사이트 goal of achieving a sustainable future.

Shirley Ali Khan, of 바카라사이트 University of Hertfordshire, who oversaw 바카라사이트 books' production, said that bolting on "allows disciplines to be untouched and prevents any hint of an environmental action agenda infiltrating studies. The very idea of this generates a lot of tension within academia."

She said: "Those academics who rail against this are often blissfully unaware that 바카라사이트y are actively involved in implementing o바카라사이트r action agendas, for example increasing participation in Europe through language skills, or increasing competitiveness through development of enterprise skills."
