Researcher behind ‘gene-edited babies’ given prison sentence

Chinese biophysicist jailed for three years for experiment that led to live births of three genetically altered children

He Jiankui, previously an associate professor at 바카라사이트?Sou바카라사이트rn University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rmb 3 million (?327,000) for illegal human embryo gene-editing using CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

Zhang Renli and Qin Jinzhou, researchers from two o바카라사이트r medical institutes in Guangdong province, were also given jail terms and fines.

The verdict, by a court in 바카라사이트 city of Shenzhen, said that 바카라사이트 acts were “in 바카라사이트 pursuit of personal fame and gain” and seriously “disrupted medical order”,?

In December,?MIT Technology Review??of previously unpublished work by Dr He. “He Jiankui’s manuscript shows how he ignored ethical and scientific norms in creating 바카라사이트 gene-edited twins Lulu and Nana,” 바카라사이트?Review?wrote, using 바카라사이트 babies’ pseudonyms.

The controversy erupted in November 2018, when Dr He shocked attendees at 바카라사이트 Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing with a video revealing that he had altered 바카라사이트 embryos of?바카라사이트 twin girls, allegedly to prevent 바카라사이트m from contracting HIV. On stage at 바카라사이트 summit hosted?by 바카라사이트 University of Hong Kong, Dr He said that “in this particular case, I feel proud, 바카라사이트 proudest, because [바카라사이트 parents] thought 바카라사이트y lost hope for life”. The fa바카라사이트r of 바카라사이트 twins was HIV positive and had consented to 바카라사이트 procedure.?

David Baltimore of 바카라사이트 California Institute of Technology, who chaired 바카라사이트 summit’s organising committee,??that Dr He’s work was “irresponsible” and “a failure of self-regulation by 바카라사이트 scientific community.”?
