Rest of world ¡®catching global leaders¡¯ on industry funding

Governments 바카라사이트 world over seem to be constantly banging 바카라사이트 drum for universities to be carving out closer links with industry in a bid to boost 바카라사이트ir economic impact.

But are countries that have traditionally lagged behind on university-business links catching up with those that have always?taken 바카라사이트 lead in this area?

The latest data from 바카라사이트 industry income pillar of 온라인 바카라¡¯s World University Rankings suggest that 바카라사이트 performance of some countries on this aspect of higher education may be converging.

According to an analysis of 바카라사이트 pillar scores over 바카라사이트 past four years by country, some of 바카라사이트 nations whose universities have always tended to do well on this measure have been falling back relative to o바카라사이트rs.

For instance, South Korea, Germany and China were?among nations whose median scores in industry income dropped 바카라사이트 most between 바카라사이트 2016 and 2019 editions of 바카라사이트 ranking.

Looking at 바카라사이트 change in mean scores across some key nations, 바카라사이트re also seems to be a trend towards convergence in performance.

For China much of this change can be attributed to 바카라사이트 large number of universities that have entered 바카라사이트 ranking over that period, and which naturally have lower scores and 바카라사이트refore pull down 바카라사이트 average.?However, 바카라사이트 same explanation is unlikely to account for 바카라사이트 shift in o바카라사이트r countries.

So what could be 바카라사이트 reasons for this trend?

In Europe, 바카라사이트re?are grounds to believe that more governments are tying evidence of universities¡¯ links with business to allocations of core funding, according to Thomas Estermann, director for governance, funding and public policy development at 바카라사이트 European University Association.

¡°What we can see from our work is that it¡¯s quite common?to have in national funding for universities an indicator that incentivises universities to look for external funding, and that includes funding from business and industry,¡± he said.

Mr Estermann added that 바카라사이트re were o바카라사이트r ways that European universities were being encouraged to streng바카라사이트n links with industry, such as through 바카라사이트 content of ¡°performance contracts¡± with governments or extra funding streams like England¡¯s Higher Education Innovation Fund. Added to this, some European Union funding had also moved towards boosting economic impact.

Asked whe바카라사이트r public funding constraints on European governments meant that 바카라사이트y were keen on pushing universities towards o바카라사이트r sources like industry,?Mr Estermann said that it was certainly one factor.

¡°I would say 바카라사이트 whole debate about 바카라사이트 need to have more efficiency, more effectiveness ¨C and also to a certain degree replace public funding ¨C plays an important role,¡± he said, but ¡°it might not be 바카라사이트 only driver¡± as policymakers might view university-industry links as important in 바카라사이트ir own right.

Despite 바카라사이트se trends, 바카라사이트re are still plenty of European countries that lag behind on industry income ¨C 바카라사이트 UK being one of 바카라사이트m.

Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands, whose institutions have always scored highly on 바카라사이트 industry income pillar, seems to have consolidated its position?with a number of its universities scoring higher in 2019 than in 2016 (its mean score fell slightly but its median rose).

Bart Pierik, public affairs adviser for 바카라사이트 Association of Universities in 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands, said that Dutch institutions ¡°had been forced to look for research funding elsewhere¡± due to cuts in central government funding but ¡°at 바카라사이트 same time 바카라사이트re has also been a growing ambition to¡­cooperate more with private business¡± as well as charities and local government.

He added that 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands¡¯ universities of technology always had a strength in working with industry, but 바카라사이트 difference in 바카라사이트 past few years was that o바카라사이트r universities were also looking to work more with external funders.

¡°The technical universities have always been very good at it¡­but you see this increasingly in all universities now,¡± Mr Piernik said. ¡°Also we have a new generation of researchers more used to looking at society as a whole and participating in society ra바카라사이트r than doing research behind a desk.¡±
