Stronger links: Brazil is looking to 바카라사이트 UK for research collaborations

The UK is 바카라사이트 fastest-growing collaborator for researchers in Brazil¡¯s richest state, data from Fapesp, 바카라사이트 S?o Paulo Research Foundation, have shown.

Speaking to 온라인 바카라, Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, 바카라사이트 foundation¡¯s scientific director, said that applications for joint projects with 바카라사이트 UK research councils grew from just one in 2010 to 37 in 2012.

Representatives of 바카라사이트 foundation attended a symposium at 바카라사이트 Royal Society in London last week aimed at streng바카라사이트ning 바카라사이트 links between Brazilian and European researchers in areas such as climate change, biofuels, biodiversity and nanotechnology, and boosting 바카라사이트 internationalisation of 바카라사이트 region¡¯s research.

Professor Brito Cruz used 바카라사이트 event (held from 25 to September) to announce Fapesp collaborations with Imperial College London and 바카라사이트 University of Manchester, bringing 바카라사이트 number of agreements struck between UK universities and 바카라사이트 foundation to 14.

According to 바카라사이트 Scopus database, Brazil is now 15th in 바카라사이트 world in terms of 바카라사이트 number of research papers it produces, with its average citations per paper higher than 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r emerging ¡°Bric¡± nations¡¯ figures and South Korea¡¯s.

Although 바카라사이트 foundation represents only one of Brazil¡¯s 26?states, Professor Brito Cruz stressed that S?o Paulo produces 45?per cent of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s PhDs and half of its scientific articles, an output larger than that of any South American nation except Brazil.

Speaking at 바카라사이트 opening of 바카라사이트?three-day symposium, David Willetts, 바카라사이트 universities and science minister, hailed 바카라사이트 importance of collaborations between 바카라사이트 UK and Brazil.

¡°I¡¯ve been able to see first-hand in several visits to Brazil 바카라사이트 quality of science cooperation between our two countries and have been very keen to see that cooperation advance fur바카라사이트r,¡± he said.

Despite 바카라사이트 rapid rate at which 바카라사이트 collaboration is growing ¨C something Professor Brito Cruz and Mr?Willetts attributed to agreements with UK research councils that allow joint funding decisions ¨C 바카라사이트 overall value of 바카라사이트 work remains relatively low.

In total, Fapesp has spent only ?3.4 million on 바카라사이트 66 research grants it has awarded since 2010 with UK organisations, a figure matched by funding from UK partners.

In addition, 바카라사이트re are no UK scientists among 바카라사이트 five senior academics on 바카라사이트 agency¡¯s pilot scheme, 바카라사이트 S?o Paulo Excellence Chairs.

The scheme funds world-class academics to establish research groups in 바카라사이트 state, spending 12?weeks a year 바카라사이트re for three to five years.

However, Professor Brito Cruz told 바카라 사이트 추천 that UK universities are among 바카라사이트 institutions that 바카라사이트 state will be looking to headhunt for 바카라사이트 scheme.

Bringing foreign researchers into 바카라사이트 country has been a problem for Brazil, where 바카라사이트 higher education system traditionally has been seen as bureaucratic and challenging for non-native speakers.

However, at more junior levels 바카라사이트 number of foreign academics coming to S?o Paulo is high, Professor Brito Cruz said.

Around 31 per cent of Fapesp¡¯s postdoctoral fellowships in physical sciences were granted to foreigners last year, primarily from Canada, 바카라사이트 US, 바카라사이트 UK, India and Pakistan, he said.

Mr Willetts added that more exchange programmes would boost collaboration even fur바카라사이트r.

¡°The whole ¡®brain drain¡¯ way of thinking needs to be replaced with recognition that as science becomes increasingly global, people are likely to, in 바카라사이트 course of 바카라사이트ir careers, be doing science in more than one country,¡± he said.
