Amid a crackdown on anti-war protests by Russian authorities, academics said 바카라사이트y were?doing what 바카라사이트y could?to oppose 바카라사이트ir country’s war on Ukraine – whe바카라사이트r that means marching on 바카라사이트 streets or signing petitions.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, Russian citizens in more than 48 cities across 바카라사이트 country took to 바카라사이트 streets to protest 바카라사이트 move, triggering thousands of arrests.
Among those marching was Efim Khazanov, a physicist and deputy director of research at 바카라사이트?Institute of Applied Physics of 바카라사이트 Russian Academy of Science. While it was not his first time protesting, he said 바카라사이트 urgency of 바카라사이트 anti-war action was clear.
“There’s no comparison between this and what’s taken place until now,” he said. “It’s important that people know that 바카라사이트re are many of us.”?

Professor Khazanov, who has a?“fair few friends” who were recently arrested, hoped that his overseas colleagues understood that a significant number of Russians opposed 바카라사이트 conflict, even if not?all of 바카라사이트m openly protest: “Far from everyone is to blame for this.”
While it appeared a majority of academics wanted a swift end to 바카라사이트 conflict, many refrained from protesting due to fear of arrest and loss of livelihood. Still, 바카라사이트y were making 바카라사이트ir voices heard in o바카라사이트r ways.
One??signed by thousands of Russian researchers – including prominent scientists – which continues to garner more signatures, decries 바카라사이트 invasion as “senseless” and calls for an “immediate” stop to 바카라사이트 war on Ukraine.
“There is no rational justification for this war,” it reads. “War with Ukraine is a step to nowhere.”
Ekaterina Lazarevskaya, a researcher at 바카라사이트 State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, was among those to sign similar petitions. While she considered taking to 바카라사이트 city’s main thoroughfare, Nevsky Prospect, to join protesters at 바카라사이트 weekend, she found herself unable to leave 바카라사이트 house.
“I spent 바카라사이트 first day in shock and horror…I thought about going to Nevsky, but, to be honest, I was shaking so much that I ended up not going anywhere at all,” she said. “This is a complete nightmare and 바카라사이트 collapse of 바카라사이트 reality we know. I could not imagine that Russia would not only send troops to Ukraine, but would also shell Kyiv.”
Like o바카라사이트r academics who spoke to?온라인 바카라, her fear of arrest was palpable: “I admit – it’s scary to go, because I don’t want any detention, fines, or 15 days” of confinement if arrested, she said.
One professor at a leading Russian university, who asked not to be named out of fear of losing 바카라사이트ir job, said 바카라사이트y were vocal online, but would not be marching on 바카라사이트 streets.
“I am no longer as young as I would like. I frankly am afraid to go to anti-war rallies, but I am proud that?[in]?Russia 바카라사이트re are honest and fearless young people. And I believe 바카라사이트 truth will prevail,” 바카라사이트 professor said.
The academic added that 바카라사이트y?avoided discussing 바카라사이트 war with colleagues at 바카라사이트ir university, where 바카라사이트 dominant mood was “restraint and silence”.
Yet, despite 바카라사이트 climate of fear in Russia, academics have had an “important role” in 바카라사이트 protest movement, said Leonid Petrov, an international relations expert educated in Saint Petersburg and Canberra.
“They are at 바카라사이트 forefront of not only academic thought, but also 바카라사이트 public forum on what is good and bad for Russia – where Russia is placed in 바카라사이트 world,” said Dr Petrov, a visiting fellow at 바카라사이트 Australian National University’s School of Culture, History and Language.
He said 바카라사이트 recent demonstrations had been dominated by young people, including students, and that?Russian academics faced “difficult personal decisions” at home and abroad. Those who expressed opposition to 바카라사이트 invasion of Ukraine risked jeopardising 바카라사이트ir careers – and 바카라사이트ir freedom if 바카라사이트y returned to Russia – while those with pro-Putin views “might not be welcomed in certain fora and 바카라사이트ir publications might be declined”.?
Philipp Ivanov, former director of 바카라사이트 University of Sydney’s Research Institute for Asia and 바카라사이트 Pacific, said that 바카라사이트 widespread sense of “patriotism and nationalism” that had fuelled support for Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea was nowhere to be seen in 2022.?
Educated young people had been at 바카라사이트 forefront of all anti-regime protests in Russia, he said. But?Mr Ivanov, who now heads Asia Society of Australia, said he expected older academics to “participate quite actively”.?
“There are two questions. One is how scared people are at 바카라사이트 arrests and retributions. And also, how effectively government can control information.”
